EHS, T-town, Newton Claim Girls Victories, Area Roundup

Effingham High School continued its hot season with a 46-31 Apollo Conference victory over Mount Zion Monday evening in girls basketball action.

The Hearts took a 10-4 opening quarter lead and led 19-8 at halftime. EHS outscored the Braves 27-23 in the second half.

Josie Zerrusen was the lone EHS player in double figures with 14 and pulled down seven rebounds. Jantzen Michael chipped in with eight points. Caitlin Kaufman pulled down seven boards.

"This was another good effort for us tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We came out and played great defnese in the first half and that was key as our offense wasn't very good. We made some good ajdustments at halftime but then failed to execute some easy shots. To their credit, we couldn't put them away. We just kept battling. We made a nice run at the end of the half, getting some great minutes from our bench. The bench was excellent tonight.  We have one more Apollo game before the break and need to take care of business Thursday against Paris."

The Hearts improve to 3-0 in the conference, 8-0 overall.

At Newton

Newton edged Casey-Westfield 39-33 in Little Illini Conference competition Monday evening. The Eagles edged out to a 7-5 opening quarter lead and led 19-16 at halftime. Casey-Westfield came back with an 8-5 third period run to tie the score at 24-24 going into the final quarter.

The Eagles then tallied a 15-9 score in the final quarter to pull out the win. Koebele led the winners with 11 points. Cartright and Richards chipped in with eight each. Newton is now 2-1 in the conference, 3-6 overall.

Deters tallied 13 points and had 12 rebounds. E.C. Thies led the Indians in scoring with 19 points. Neoga improves to 6-3 on the season.

Cumberland was led by Katie Poe with 17 points and Lainey Jackson with 11. The Pirates drop to 0-3 in the conference, 0-9 overall.

Woodlawn handed South Central a 57-30 non-conference loss Monday evening.

Woodlawn held a 31-16 halftime lead and never looked back. Knox and Murdock tallied 12 each while England scored 11 for the winners. South Central was led by Hahn with 16.

The Cougars fall to 0-8 on the season.
