Lady Hearts Win Bob Kerans Tournament

The Effingham Lady Hearts won the Bob Kerans Newton Girls Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday, running the table and going 4-0 with a 47-29 win over the Newton Lady Eagles.

Newton led the game 14-7 after one quarter.  Lady Hearts Coach Jeff Schafer said, "Newton outplayed us in all phases of the game in the first half.  They really took it to us.  We were not ready to play."

The Lady Eagles were still in front 20-15 at halftime, but Effingham came out of the gate smoking to start the second half and outscored 21-5 in the third quarter to take a 36-25 lead after three quarters, and then outpointed Newton 11-4 in the final quarter to post the win.

Schafer said, "To our kids' credit, we made some really good adjustments at halftime and played much better.  It started on the defensive end, as we only gave up nine points in the second half and only three baskets over the last 12 minutes.  We had four kids with six or more points in the second half and executed much better."

Caitlin Kaufman led Effingham with 13 points and Jantzen Michael was in double figures with 10 points.  

Also for Effingham: Stephanie Robb eight, Josie Zerrusen seven, Lauren Stephenson four, Brittany Beals two, Maddy Field two, and Felicia Totten one.

Schafer said, "That was a good start to our season, now it's onto the first part of our Apollo schedule with Charleston."

Effingham is off to a 5-0 start on the season.
