Cumberland, Mulberry Grove Tourneys Get Underway

CUMBERLAND TOURNAMENT
Four games were on tap during opening night competition at the Cumberland Thanksgiving Boys Basketball Tournament Monday evening.
In the opener, Chrisman defeated Palestine-Hutsonville 56-38. The second contest went to Neoga over Martinsville 59-11. Dieterich defeated Cumberland 63-54 and Newton finished out with a 49-22 win over Oblong.
Dieterich 63, Cumberland 54
Dieterich trailed Cumberland 11-10 after the opening quarter and 25-17 at halftime. The Movin' Maroons then kicked into high gear with a 22-12 third period run and outscored the Pirates 24-17 in the final quarter.
Tanner Traub and Alex Bohnhoff tallied 17 points each for the winners while Devin Aherin had 12 and Nick Feldhake 10.
Cumberland was led by Houston Napier with 22 points.

Newton 49, Oblong 22
Newton took a quick 30-9 first half lead and never looked back in downing Oblong. The Eagles were led by Luke Stone and Brock Mammoser with 14 points each. Stone pulled down nine rebounds and Mammoser had four assists.
The Eagles connected on eight three-pointers in the contest.

MULBERRY GROVE TOURNAMENT
Cowden-Herrick opened the Mulberry Grove Tournament with a 54-46 win over Ramsey. In other games, Odin edged Patoka 67-62 and Sandoval downed Mulberry Grove 74-62.
The Hornets trailed Ramsey 15-8 after the opening quarter and 30-17 at halftime. Cowden-Herrick then had an 11-6 third period run and pulled out the win in the final period with a 26-10 tally.
Colton Burrus scored big for the Hornets with 31 points. He connected on 10 field goals including two three-pointers and hit five of seven free throws.

Iin a regular season contest, North Clay (Louisville) handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a 51-39 non-conference loss Monday evening.
The Cardinals took a 28-12 halftime lead. The Cardinals were led by Britton with 17 points, Rubsam with 12 and Young with 11.
St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Maxey with 17 and Behrens with 16.
