Cody Rincker Era Begins w/Win at St. Anthony Tournament

The Cody Rincker era at St. Anthony High School began in style Monday night as the Bulldogs posted a 58-30 win over the Charleston Trojans in opening night action at the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament.  

The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

A close 11-7 game after one quarter was blown open in the second period as the Bulldogs outscored the Trojans 23-7 to take a 34-14 halftime lead.  Rincker was able to experiment with a variety of lineup combinations in the second half as the Bulldogs enlarged the lead to 30 points once before posting the 28-point victory.

St. Anthony hit 54% of its shots, making 23 of 43.  The Bulldogs also made seven of 10 foul shots, and turned the ball over just nine times after turning it over on their first three possessions of the game.  St. Anthony grabbed 28 rebounds and made two of five three-point shots.

Charleston was held to 31% shooting, 10 of 32, and made just seven of 15 foul shots.  The outsized Trojans tried 17 three-pointers and made just three.

Alex Hoelscher got the Bulldogs out to an early lead, scoring nine of his 16 points in the first half, then added seven points in the third period.  Neil Williams scored 13 points on five of eight shooting.  Also for the Bulldogs: Matt Gibson eight points, John Goeckner six, Derek Rios five, and Andrew Gardewine, Zach Gardewine, Eric Gurtner, Connor Greene and Kyle Bourgeois two apiece.

Colin McInerney scored nine points to lead Charleston.

St. Anthony takes a night off Tuesday before returning Wednesday to take on Belleville Althoff.

Althoff will be Effingham's opponent tonight as Ron Reed's crew sees their first action of the season at the tournament.  Game time is 6:30pm.  Hear the game on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  

In the other contest at St. Anthony Monday, Mt. Zion won over Robinson 61-48.

Three games at the tournament tonight: Mt. Zion vs. Breese Central at 5pm, Effingham and Belleville Althoff at 6:30pm, and Mattoon vs. Robinson at 8pm.
