EIU Women Lose to SLU

Eastern Illinois cooled off in the second half as the Panthers shot 21 percent in the final twenty minutes falling on the road 71-52 at Saint Louis.
 
The Panthers dropped to 0-3 on the season and will host Loyola-Chicago next Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lantz Arena.  The Billikens improved to 2-1.
 
Sabina Oroszova led the way in the first half for EIU as the junior collected her second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  She has 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half as the Panthers trailed 37-35 at the break.
 
Sadie Stipanovich put SLU up 12-6 five minutes into the game making a pair of free throws after getting fouled on an offensive rebound.  14 of the Billikens 45 rebounds on the night were on the offensive glass including four of Stipanovich’s eight rebounds.
 
EIU had solid outside shooting and good bench play as Katlyn Payne’s 3-pointer gave EIU a lead with 9:42 to play in the first.  Arnisha Thomas extended EIU’s lead to 25-20 with 8:10 to play as the junior college transfer had 12 points off the bench.
 
After Stipanovich tied the game for the sixth time in the first half with lay-up at the 2:34 mark both schools traded the lead before Denisha Womack drained a 3-pointer with 1:01 left to give SLU the halftime lead.
 
EIU turned the ball over on three of its first four possessions in the second half as SLU slowly extended the lead.  Halee Castleman’s jumper with 13:36 left to play gave Saint Louis its first double digit lead.  Castleman was one of five SLU players to finish in double figures as she scored a career high 13 points.
 
Payne’s jumper with 10:36 to play cut the lead to eight points at 49-41.  Olivia Jakubicek answered with a lay-up as SLU went on a 7-2 run to take control of the game.  Erin Nelson led Saint Louis with 14 points while Stipanovich had ten.
 
Payne was the final EIU player in double figures finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds.  EIU was 0-for-7  from 3-point range in the second half after hitting 4-of-9 from the beyond the arc in the first half including their first three 3-pointers.
