Sigel St. Michael claimed a 42-19 victory over Stewardson-Strasburg in the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

St. Michael jumped out to a 13-1 opening quarter lead and never looked back. Three players hit double digits for the winners. B. Schumacher and L. Jansen scored 14 each while J. Bueker added 10. Stew-Stras was led by K. Davis with six points.

In the second game, Brownstown/St. Elmo won over Neoga 39-22. F. Viraneontes tallied 16 points to guide BSE. Neoga was led by B. Banning with 11 points.

In the third game of the evening, in consolation bracket action, Effingham Sacred Heart defeated Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick to advance to the consolation title contest Saturday.

The Shamrocks held BCCH scoreless in the first half for a 12-0 lead. Natalie Carie led the winners with nine points.

Tonight's contests feature winner bracket action as Altamont faces Dieterich at 6:45 and Sigel St. Michael takes on Brownstown/St. Elmo at 8. In the consolation bracket at 5:30 p.m., Stew-Stras/Windsor goes against Neoga.

The tournament comes to a close Saturday with the consolation championship at 9 a.m., the third place game at 10:15 and the championship at 11:30.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony and Nokomis split victories Thursday evening. The Bullpups won the seventh-grade contest 35-7 to improve to 9-6. Meg Richards scored 13 for the winners.

In eighth-grade action, Nokomis claimed a 27-14 win. St. Anthony (1-12) was led by Mary Ann Saba and Katie Kabbes with four points each.

At Oblong

Jasper County edged Marshall for the championship of the LEIC Tournament Thursday evening, 27-25.

Marshall held a 14-8 halftime lead and a 23-17 lead going into the final quarter. Jasper County rallied with a 10-2 run and connected on five of six free throws to pull out the win.

Abby Frohning tallied 10 points while Alexis Cox had eight.
