Cavaliers Clip Nets

(Cleveland, OH) -- Kyrie Irving posted 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds to guide the Cavaliers to a 98-94 win over the new-look Nets at Quicken Loans Arena. Tristan Thompson scored a team-high 18 points to go with nine boards for Cleveland. Jarrett Jack had 12 points off the bench in the win.  Kevin Garnett registered eight points and 10 rebounds in his Brooklyn debut. Nets head coach Jason Kidd says they're still figuring out how to play together.

Paul Pierce tallied 17 points, and Jason Terry had 14 points also in their first game for the Nets. "KG," Pierce and "JET" were traded from Boston in the offseason. This was Kidd's first game at the helm of his former team.

 

76ers Shock Heat

(Philadelphia, PA)  -- Michael Carter-Williams almost put up a quadruple-double as the 76ers shocked the Heat, 114-110, in their home opener at the Wells Fargo Center. Carter-Williams finished with 22 points, 12 assists, nine steals, seven rebounds and only one turnover in his NBA debut. Evan Turner added 26 points, while Spencer Hawes tallied 24 points and nine boards. One night after beating the Bulls, Miami fell behind Philadelphia 19-0 to start the game. LeBron James had 25 points and 13 assists in the loss.  Chris Bosh also had a double-double with 22 points and 10 boards. The Heat are 1-1.

 

Raptors Hold Off Celtics

(Toronto, Ontario) -- The Raptors pulled out an ugly win, 93-87, win over the Celtics in the opener for both teams at the Air Canada Centre. Toronto forced Boston into 22 turnovers, which led to 25 points. Rudy Gay scored 19 points with eight rebounds in the victory. Jonas Valanciunas added eight points, 11 boards and two blocks. Boston outscored the Raptors 34-22 in the third quarter to get back in the game, but couldn't complete the comeback. Jeff Green scored a game-high 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting for the Celtics. It was Boston head coach Brad Stevens' first regular season game manning the sideline.  

 

Pistons Pummel Wizards

(Auburn Hills, MI) -- Greg Monroe posted 24 points and 16 rebounds to power the Pistons to a season-opening 113-102 win over the Wizards at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Will Bynum added 19 points and five assists for Detroit, which won their season-opener for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Josh Smith chipped in with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists in his debut with the Pistons. Trevor Ariza had a game-high 28 points to go with 10 boards for Washington, which has lost four straight season openers. John Wall tallied 20 points and 11 assists in defeat.

 

Knicks Sneak Past Bucks

(New York, NY) -- The Knicks almost blew a 56-31 halftime lead, but held on for a 90-83 win at Madison Square Garden for their home opener. New York turned the ball over 22 times. Carmelo Anthony had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyson Chandler collected five blocks along with 10 points. Andrea Bargnani struggled in his Knicks debut, missing six of his nine shots en route to six points. Gary Neal paced the Bucks with 16 points off the bench. Milwaukee turned the ball over 23 times and had only 19 assists. Larry Sanders was plagued by foul trouble and played only 12 scoreless minutes. Brandon Knights left early with a hamstring injury.

 

Rockets Dominate Bobcats

(Houston, TX) -- Dwight Howard's Rockets debut went well as he posted 17 points, 26 rebounds and two blocks in Houston's 96-83 victory over the Bobcats at the Toyota Center. James Harden tallied 21 points and five assists, while Francisco Garcia hit five three pointers off the bench on his way to 19 points. Al Jefferson's first game with Charlotte went the opposite of Dwight's. "Big Al" shot 6-of-19 for 13 points and eight boards. The Bobcats shot 37-percent from the field.  

 

T'wolves Top Magic In OT

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Kevin Love racked up 31 points and 17 rebounds as the Timberwolves topped the Magic 120-115 in overtime at the Target Center.  Kevin Martin netted 23 points and Ricky Rubio had 13 points, 11 assists and six boards for the T'wolves in the season-opening win. Corey Brewer chipped in with 16 points in the victory. Arron Afflalo recorded 28 points, nine boards and five assists for Orlando, which opened its season with a 97-87 loss in Indiana on Tuesday. Nikola Vucevic added 22 points and 16 rebounds in defeat.

 

Pacers Sink Pelicans

(New Orleans, LA) -- Paul George exploded for 32 points, six rebounds and five assists to help the Pacers pull out a 95-90 over the Pelicans at New Orleans Arena. Indiana outscored New Orleans 59-40 after halftime. After having seven blocks in the opener, Roy Hibbert tallied another five, while Lance Stephenson had another strong game with 16 points, eight boards and four assists. The Pacers are 2-0. Eric Gordon and Jrue Holiday combined for 49 points in the loss. Anthony Davis posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, but shot 8-of-20 from the field and turned the ball over four times. Tyreke Evans was quiet off the bench in 22 minutes with four points.

 

Mavericks Maul Hawks

(Dallas, TX) -- Monta Ellis posted a game-high 32 points to go with eight assists as the Mavericks topped the Hawks 118-109 in the season opener at American Airlines Center. Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points and five assists for Dallas, which has won two straight season openers. Vince Carter tallied 21 points off the bench in the win. Jeff Teague had a team-high 24 points to go with nine assists in defeat. Paul Millsap recorded 20 points and five boards in his debut for Atlanta, which has lost two straight season openers. It was Mike Budenholzer's first game at the helm of Atlanta.

 

Spurs Use Big First Half To Down Grizz

(San Antonio, TX) -- Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw scored 14 points apiece as the Spurs used a big first half to beat the Grizzlies 101-94 in the season opener for both teams at AT&T Center. Tony Parker posted 13 points and nine assists, while Patty Mills and Manu Ginobili both scored 12 points for the Spurs, who led 48-27 at the break. Tim Duncan left in the third quarter with a chest contusion. Tony Allen netted a game-high 15 points for Memphis, which was swept by San Antonio in the Western Conference Finals last season. Marc Gasol and Mike Conley both had 14 points in the setback.

 

Durant, Thunder Nip Jazz

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Kevin Durant registered 42 points and eight rebounds to power the Thunder to a 101-98 season-opening win over the Jazz in Salt Lake City. Durant was 9-of-24 from the field and 22-for-24 at the free throw line. Reggie Jackson and Thabo Sefolosha each had 14 points for Oklahoma City, which has won four of its last five season openers. Alec Burks scored a team-high 24 points off the bench to go with six rebounds and as many assists in the loss. Enes Kanter had 14 points and 10 boards for Utah, which has lost four of the last five openers.

 

Suns Blast Blazers In Season Opener

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Miles Plumlee racked up 18 points and 15 rebounds in his Phoenix debut as the Suns blasted the Trail Blazers 104-91 in the season opener for both teams at US Airways Center. Goran Dragic posted 26 points, nine assists and six rebounds, while Eric Bledsoe added 22 points, seven boards and six helpers in his first game with the Suns, who gave head coach Jeff Hornacek the win in his coaching debut. P.J. Tucker pitched in with 18 points in the victory. Damian Lillard dropped in a game-high 32 points for Portland. LaMarcus Aldridge was the only other player in double figures with 28 points in defeat.

 

Kings Clip Nuggets In Opener

(Sacramento, CA) -- Jason Thompson's basket with 41 seconds left held up as the Kings clipped the Nuggets 90-88 in the first game of the year for both teams at Sleep Train Arena. DeMarcus Cousins notched 30 points and 14 rebounds for the Kings. Greivis Vasquez scored 17 points and Isaiah Thomas tallied 16 off the bench in the victory.  Ty Lawson posted 20 points, eight assists and five rebounds to lead Denver, which lost in head coach Brian Shaw's debut. J.J. Hickson, Randy Foye and Andre Miller all had 12 points in the setback.

 

Warriors Wax Lakers

(Oakland, CA) -- Klay Thompson poured in a game-high 38 points as the Warriors waxed the Lakers 125-94 in their season opener at ORACLE Arena. Thompson was 15-of-19 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point range.  David Lee recorded 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Warriors, who shot 53.5-percent as a team.  Toney Douglas added 13 points off the bench, and Stephen Curry netted 10 in the victory. Jodie Meeks and Xavier Henry scored 14 points apiece for LA, which opened its campaign with a 116-103 home win over the Clippers on Tuesday. Pau Gasol and Jordan Farmar both had 12 points in the setback.

 

Bulls Face Knicks

(Chicago, IL) -- The Chicago Bulls hit the floor at the United Center for the first time this season tonight against the New York Knicks. The Bulls lost their opener 107-95 to the Heat in Miami Tuesday. The Knicks defeated Milwaukee 90-83 in New York last night to begin their season.

 

Former Celtics' Trio Debuts For Nets

(Cleveland, OH) -- Jason Kidd's debut as the head coach of the Nets did not go as planned. The Nets lost 98-94 against the Cavaliers in Cleveland. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry also debut for Brooklyn Wednesday after being traded from Boston in the offseason. Garnett had eight points and 10 rebounds while Paul Pierce had 17 points, and Terry had 14 off the bench.

 

Iverson Formally Calls It A Career

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Allen Iverson officially announced his retirement from basketball Wednesday. The announcement comes three years after the 38-year-old last played in the NBA in 2010.  Iverson was drafted by Philadelphia in 1996 and spent his first 10-plus seasons with the 76ers. He was the Rookie of the Year in 1997, the 2001 NBA MVP, an 11-time All-Star and a four-time scoring champ.
