Cumberland Nabs Victory, EHS, Newton Seasons End

PARIS -- Cumberland opened its run at the Class 2A Paris Boys Basketball Regional with a victory Monday evening.

The Pirates handed Robinson a 60-53 loss in overtime.

They opened with a 15-8 first quarter run behind Chase Stewart's two three-pointers. The lead stood at 25-16 at halftime. Stewart added another three-pointer and Kaleb Bierman put in a basket and a free throw, also for three.

The Pirates went on 14-12 third quarter run to lead 39-28 and seemed to have the game in hand, but Robinson came roaring back with an 18-7 final quarter to tie the score at 46-46.

In the overtime period, the Pirates got back on the right track as Cameron Roedl hit a basket and three free throws for five while Stewart put in five of six from the free throw line. Kelby Bierman and Kaleb Bierman added a basket each.

Stewart finished with 20 points on five three-pointers and five of six at the line. Also in double figures were Kaleb Bierman with 16 on six field goals and four of five at the line and Roedl with 13.

In the opening game Monday, Hutsonville/Palestine/Oblong won over Newton by a 56-51 count.

These two teams were tied at 14-14 after the opening quarter. The Eagles were on a three-point run as Lance Volk connected for two and Hayden Mulvey and Drew Earnest hit one each in the quarter.

Newton had a 10-9 second period as Volk put in two baskets and was three of three at the line for seven and the Eagles led 24-23.

Again both teams scored 14 points, this time in the third quarter and Newton led 38-37. Volk added two more three-pointers and Mulvey hit from beyond the arc.

But OPH came back with an 18-13 final quarter to pull out the victory. Blank scored two baskets and was four of six at the line for eight points while Roeder scored his third three-pointer of the game.

Newton's Volk finished with 23 points on eight field goals, half of those for three points and was three of three at the line. Mulvey chipped in with 11.

The regional continues Wednesday with Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville meeting Lawrenceville at 6 p.m. followed by Cumberland taking on Paris at 7:30. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m.

Class 2A  Fairfield Regional

Flora and Fairfield were winners in the opening games of the Fairfield Regional.

Flora defeated Vandalia, 52-46 while Fairfield was a 55-33 winner over Mount Carmel.

Flora advances to meet Teutopolis at 6 p.m. Wednesday while Fairfield faces Marshall at 7:30.

The winners will then advance to the regional championship Friday at 7 p.m.

 

Class 3A Effingham Regional

Effingham lost its opener in its own regional and did not get to play on its home floor since the contest was at Charleston.

Charleston picked up a  9-36 victory. The Trojans edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 24-19 at halftime.

The Hearts remained close on two three-pointers by Ian Kineklaar and four points from Jake NIebrugge.

EHS came back with a slight 7-5 third quarter edge to pull within 29-26. But Charleston's Oakley went on a tear with three baskets and seven of eight at the line as the Trojans had a 20-10 run for the victcory.

Effingham was led by Kinkelaar with six on two three-pointers and Niebrugge, also with six on three regular baskets.

Charleston will meet top-seeded Centralia at 6 p.m. Wednesday while Herrin and Mattoon square off at 7:30. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m.
