St. Anthony Wins Class 1A Regional Opener, WSS, CHBC Seasons End

Effingham St. Anthony scored a convincing victory over Ramsey by a 102-16 count as the Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Boys Basketball Regional got underway Monday evening.

The Bulldogs ran out to a 34-7 opening quarter lead as Ryan Schmidt and Brock Fearday went to work. Schmidt connected on four baskets, one a three-pointer and was three of four at the line for 12 points and Fearday hit four baskets, two from beyond the arc, and was two of two at the line, also for 12 points.

The lead went to 58-12 at halftime. Schmidt added on seven more points and a total of seven Bulldogs scored in that quarter. Will Fearday hit a regular basket and a three-pointer for five.

Ramsey could muster only one point in the third quarter as the Bulldogs put together 30 points. Nine St. Anthony players hit net in that quarter with Samuel Link and Miles Waldhoff scoring five each.

Fourteen players scored in the game for St. Anthony with four finishing in double figures. Schmidt led the way with 23 points on nine field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of five at the line. B. Fearday added 18 on seven field goals, two from three-point range, and two of four at the line. Waldhoff finished with 12 and Link added 10. W. Fearday was a point away from double figures with nine.

Ramsey was led by Aaron Trexler with nine points on four baskets, one a three-pointer. The Rams finished the season with a 1-26 record.

In the second contest, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg fell to Nokomis, 56-42.

Nokomis edged out to a 14-13 opening quarter lead and led 23-19 at halftime. Nokomis had a 33-25 second half.

Four Nokomis players finished in double figures. Kannon Jonas tallied 14 points while Konnor Reynolds and Ian Keller added 12 each and Drake Taylor had 10.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg had three players in double figures. Jackson Gurgel hit five field goals and five free throws for 15 points while Aiden Ayers added 12 and Brody Bible 11.

The Hatchets finished the season with a 17-14 record.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City saw its season come to a close with a 59-28 loss to Arcola.

Arcola edged out to an 8-5 opening quarter lead as B. Phillips hit three baskets and was two of four at the line for all eight points.

Griffin Vaughn scored three of the Bobcats' five points.

The lead went to 20-18 at halftime. Vaughn continued as the offensive catalyst with two regular baskets and two three-pointers for 10. AJ Radloff added a three-pointer.

But that's where things fell apart for the Bobcats. Arcola came out in the third quarter with a 21-3 run and finished out with a 19-8 final quarter.

In game four, Bethany Okaw Valley was a 54-52 winner over Moweaqua Central A&M.

Regional play continues Wednesday as St. Anthony faces Nokomis at 6 p.m. followed by Arcola against Bethany Okaw Valley at 7:30. The winners then advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m.
