St. Anthony Edges Newton, 59-58; EHS Trounces Mt. Zion In Girls H.S. Basketball

Thursday evening was a history setting event, but also a wild game as Effingham St. Anthony edged Newton, 59-58 in girls high school basketball. in a game heard on 979XFM.

The Bulldogs' Nancy Ruholl made school history, passing the All-Time school scoring record for both boys and girls. She broke the record in the opening quarter with 4:13 on the clock, hitting a basket that pushed her ahead of the 1970 record set by Mike Wente of 1,663 for his career.

Ruholl scored nine opening quarter points on four baskets, one a three-pointer. She needed eight to break the record.

Ruholl went on to finish with 31 points for the contest on 10 field goals, two from beyond the arc, and hit nine of 12 at the line. She also pulled down nine rebounds.

Despite the historic opening quarter for St. Anthony, the Eagles held a 19-15 lead as Camryn Martin took the leadership role, scoring four baskets, one a three-pointer, for nine points.

The Eagles continued on with a 12-10 second period as Izzy Meinhart scored five points and C. Martin added four more.

Newton held a 31-25 halftime lead and continued its run with a 15-12 third quarter to lead 46-37 going into the final period. C. Martin added seven more points, one on a basket and five of five at the line.

Ruholl added five points to her total in the third period while Addi Nuxoll scored six as St. Anthony led 37-28.

Then it was an all-out war in the final quarter for St. Anthony as the Bulldogs went on a 22-12 blitz to pull out the one-point win. Ruholl came through with three baskets and hit a perfect six of six at the line for 12 points. Addi Nuxoll added five points on a basket and three of four at the line. But the fateful winning point came on a free throw by Adysen Rios. Rios got a steal and went coast-to-coast, getting fouled with just one second in the game. She connected on the first one for the victory.

Addi Nuxoll finished as the second player for the Bulldogs in double figures with 11. Ruholl hit 10 field goals, two fro three point range, and was nine of 12 at the line.

"This is the first time in school history we have had a team win more than 23 games in four straight seasons," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. "Nancy is now the all-time leading scorer with 1,687 points heading into the post season.

"Addi Nuxoll was big in the second half, scoring all of her 11 points and ended with 10 rebounds, an excellent double, double to finish off the regular season.

"Sophomore Addi Lauritzen scored five points and finished with 15 rebounds. She had 10 offensive boards.

"It was an awesome Last Dance at the Enlow Center for seniors Addi Nuxoll, Kallie Kabbes, Katie Kollman, Ava Faber and Adysen Rios."

The Bullodgs are now 25-4 on the season and head into the Class 1A Neoga Regional Monday against the winner of Saturday's 5 p.m. game featuring Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at Neoga.

Newton was led by C. Martin with 25 poiints on seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and 10 of 11 at the line. Karasyn Martin added 11 and Claire Probst with nine. C. Martin had eight rebounds. K. Martin led in assists with three. Allie Hermann led in steals with three.

The Eagles finished the regular season with a 20-7 record. They will open regional play at the Class 2A Palestine Regional Tuesday where they will face either Robinson or Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville at 7:30 p.m. Those two teams play Monday.

In the junior varsity game, Newton was a 42-38 winner.

Alani Bergbower led the Eagles with 21 points and Grace Schumacher added 11.

St. Anthony was led by Ali Kollman with 16 and Jackie Vonderheide with 12.

"It has been an awesome regular season," said St. A Coach Rios. "This team has battled thorugh adversity and have competed at a high level, playing one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. We look forward to seeing a lot of red, white and blue in Neoga next week."

At Effingham

Effingham High School played host to Mount Zion in Apollo Conference competition and came out a 74-43 winner Thursday evening.

The Hearts put this game under the win column in the opening quarter with a 23-3 run.

Averie Wolf hit two regular baskets, a three-pointer and a free throw for eight points in the period while Alyssa Martin connected on a basket and four of four at the line for six. Bella Austin added five.

Bria Beals went on a second quarter run, knocking in four three-pointers for 12 of the Hearts 16 points for a 39-19 halftime lead.

The Hearts continued on with a 35-24 second half to finish with the 31 point winning margin.

Four players finished in double figures for Coach Jeff Schafer's crew. Beals ended with 22 points on eight baskets, six coming from three-point range. Sidney Donaldson finished with 13 points while Wolfe added 12 and Martin 10.

Mount Zion was led by Jocelyn Turner with nine points and Ava Anderson with eight.

In the junior varsity game, Effingham was a 60-31 winner.

The Hearts were led by Maci Hayes and Mara Braun led EHS with 12 points each while McKenzie Love added 10.
