GREENVILLE — Effingham St. Anthony placed second at the James Burke Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament at Greenville Friday.

The Bullpups faced Staunton for the title and fell 46-37.

Staunton ran out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead and led 25-10 at halftime. St. Anthony came back with a 27-21 second half but couldn’t overcome that opening quarter.

B. Verdeyen scored 18 for the Bullpups, hitting five field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven free throws.

In the third place contest, Greenville won over Salem, 40-32.

Aviston downed Piasa 40-33 in the consolation championship.

At Effingham

Effingham B was a 31-25 winner over Triad in Friday action.

Effingham edged out to a 13-12 opening half lead behind Cam Moon’s six points and Jenner Keyes five points.

In the second half, Effingham had an 18-13 run. Bryden Kade scored six points and Colby Field and Hunter Harminson hit a three-pointer each.

Altamont Lutheran came calling and picked up both seventh- and eighth-grade wins over Dieterich Firday.

Altamont Lutheran won the seventh-grade contest, 30-14, taking a 17-2 halftime lead.

Kroening led the way with nine points while Bowman had seven for Altamont Lutheran.

Dieterich was led by Niemerg with seven.
