EHS Beats Mt. Zion, St. A Falls In Shootout, Area Girls Roundup

MOUNT ZION -- Effingham High School stayed unbeaten in the Apollo Conference with a 51-42 victory over Mount Zion in girls basketball Saturday.

The Hearts edged out to an 11-8 opening quarter lead behind four points by Alyssa Martin and Averie Wolfe and a three by Bella Austin.

EHS led 20-18 at halftime. The Hearts remained close on free throws, connecting on seven of 10 in the quarter.

The Braves came back with a 15-12 third period to pull ahead 33-32 going into the final quarter. Anderson went on a run, hitting three baskets and a free throw for nine points.

But the Hearts got back on track with a 14-9 final period. Wolfe hit a three-pointer, a regular basket and three of four at the line for eight points while Martin connected on a basket and two free throws.

Two players finished in double digits for the Hearts. Wolfe tallied 19 with six field goals, one a three-pointer and five of six at the line. Martin chipped in with 11.

The Hearts were 13 of 17 at the line for the contest.

Mount Zion was led by Anderson with 11 points.

Effingham improved to 5-0 in the conference and 15-3 overall. The Hearts are back in action Tuesday at Taylorville in a game that can be heard on 979XFM.

In the junior varsity contest, Effingham was a 51-31 winner. The Hearts were led by McKenzie Love with 12 and Melia Wendling with 11.

At Breese

Effingham St. Anthony competed in the Breese Shootout Saturday after a regular season game against Flora was canceled.

The Bulldogs fell to Okawville, 46-34.

"We got into the shootout after our regular season game was canceled and Vienna exited the Breese Central Tournament the day prior to the event," said St. Anthony Coach Aaron Rios. "We played well in three out of the four quarters."

St. Anthony and Okawville were tied 13-13 after the first quarter. The Bulldogs only trailed by three after halftime, 27-24.

But Okawville went on a third quarter 14-2 run to lead 41-26 going into the final period.

Okawville had two players in double figures, Brynn Rhodes with 15 and Kinley Hackstadt with 11.

St. Anthony was led by Nancy Ruholl with 14 points. She hit five baskets, one a three-pointer and was three of three at the line.

"It was a great test for us to kick off the second half of the season," said Coach Rios.

The Bulldogs are now 13-4 on the season and 4-0 in the National Trail Conference. They will be back in action tonight, traveling to Salem.

At Woodlawn

Altamont traveled to Woodlawn and suffered a 47-43 loss Saturday.

The Indians held a 10-7 opening quarter lead as Ella Nelson and Reagan Kuenstler knocked in a three-pointer each and Kaylee Lurkins hit two baskets for four points.

Altamont led 21-17 at halftime. Kuenstler hit another three-pointer while Sophia Pearcy also put in a three-pointer.

The Indians were ahead 36-30 after three quarters. Kylie Osteen scored on two baskets and two free throws for six while Avery Aldrich added five points.

But the bottom dropped out for Altamont in the final quarter as Woodlawn came back with a 17-7 final period to pull out the victory.

Osteen led Altamont with 12 points on three field goals and five of 10 at the line. Kuenstler and Aldrich added nine points each.

In junior varsity action, Woodlawn was a 21-19 winner as the two teams played just a half game.

Altamont was led by Justyce Higgs with 11 points.

Teutopolis competed in the Breese Paws Shootout Saturday and fell to Carlyle by a 44-36 couint.

Carlyle took a 15-8 opening quarter lead and held a 25-19 halftime lead.

Malea Helmink kept the Wooden Shoes close in the second quarter with two field goals and three of four at the line for seven points. Chloe Probst added four points.

But Carlyle had an 11-10 third quarter edge and finished with an 8-7 final quarter for the win.

Two players finished in double figures for the Shoes. Anna Probst hit four baskets, one a three-pointer, and was two of two at the line for 11 points. She scored all 11 in the second half. C. Probst added 10.

Malea Helmink led the way in rebounds with 13. C. Probst and Kelsey Niemerg had two steals each.

Neoga played host to Casey-Westfield Saturday and picked up a 40-26 victory.

The Indians edged out to an 8-4 opening quarter lead then pushed that to 19-9 at halftime.

Casey-Westfield came back with a 6-3 third period but Neoga went on an 18-11 final quarter run to finish strong.

Atalie Osborn led the way for Neoga with 15 points on six field goals, two from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Brynn Richards added 14 points.

Neoga improved to 9-9 on the season and returns to action today traveling to Pana.
