St. Anthony, T-town Win, EHS, Newton Fall At EHS/T-town Christmas Classic

Effingham  St. Anthony and Teutopolis opened action at the Effingham/Teutopolis Boys Christmas Basketball Classic with victories while Effingham and Newton suffered an opening round loss each Thursday.

The Bulldogs held a 29-15 halftime lead on Oregan and went on for a 64-38 victory.

St. Anthony came back with a 22-12 third quarter run and never looked back.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Ryan Schmidt with 25 points and 10 rebounds. He connected on eight field goals and was nine of 13 at the line.

Also in double figures for St. Anthony were Brock Fearday with 13 and Miles Waldhoff with 10. B. Fearday had nine rebounds.

Teutopolis claimed a 63-32 win over Charleston.

The Wooden Shoes ran out to an 11-2 opening quarter lead and led 30-16 at halftime.

Three players finished in double digits. Landyn Thoele led the way with 11 points on four field goals, two of those three-pointers, and one of two at the line. Mick Niebrugge and Gavin Addis finished with 10 each.

Chicago Brooks claimed a 49-33 win over Effingham. The Hearts edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead but Brooks came back with a 14-8 second period to lead 25-20 at halftime.

Brooks then had a 24-13 second half.

Effingham was led by Jude Traub with 10 points on four field goals, two of those three-pointers. Jake Niebrugge chipped in with nine.

Newton fell to Lincoiln Way East, 69-45.

Lincoln Way East stepped out to a 19-10 opening quarter lead and held that same nine point lead at halftime, 30-21. LWE then had an 18-11 third quarter.

The winners were led by Evan Riiff with 20 points while Will Buchanan added 13 and Brenden Sanders and Jonathan Aluyi added 10 each.

In the other game at Effingham, Tolono Unity defeated Lutheran North 75-70. In other games at Teutopolis, Mattoon won over Lawrenceville 64-54, Pleasant Plains downed Dixon 61-54 and Champaign Centennial trounced Belvidere 83-34.
