MATTOON -- Effingham High School Coach Jeff Schafer is just three wins away from breaking Coach Jim Maxedon's record for most victories for the Hearts.

He added to that total Thursday evening as his girls basketball squad downed Mattoon, 45-40.

The Hearts moved into a 10-8 opening quarter lead as Ella Niebrugge and Marissa Allie scored four points each on a basket and two free throws.

The Green Wave came back with a 12-7 second period to lead 20-17 at halftime.

EHS came out after halftime and went on a 17-12 third period run to lead 34-32 and then had an 11-8 final period run.

Niebrugge scored seven of the Hearts 17 points in the third period while Madison Mapes knocked in a three-pointer.

In the final quarter, Saige Althoff took over with five points and the Hearts' Averie Wolf and Marissa Allie hit two free throws each.

Niebrugge finished as the lone player in double figures for the Hearts with 14 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line.

Effingham improved to 6-1 on the season and Coach Schafer now has 456 victories while Coach Maxedon has 458.

The Hearts captured the junior varsity contest, 51-33. Alyssa Martin led the Hearts with 17 points while Olivia Moser added 10.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City went overtime before the Bulldogs pulled out a 72-64 victory Thursday evening.

CHBC held a 17-15 opening quarter lead behind Gracie Heckert who nailed four baskets, three of those from long range, for 11 points.

The Bobcats still held a two-point lead at halftime, 34-32. This time around it was Macee Rodman who took over the scoring with seven points on two baskets and three free throws. Madison Wojcik added six points.

St. Anthony was keeping close as Lucy Fearday scored seven of her team's 15 opening quarter points while Nancy Ruholl hit two three-pointers and two free throws for eight in the second period.

The Bulldogs then got within 47-46 with a 14-13 third period run. Fearday again connected on free throws with four and a basket for six points.

St. Anthony continued its second half surge with a 15-11 final quarter to knot the score at 61-61, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Fearday scored eight points while Ruholl added seven as the Bulldogs had a 15-3 run to pull out the victory. Fearday connected on two baskets and four of seven free throws. Ruholl hit a three-pointer, a regular basket and was two of two at the line.

Fearday and Ruholl provided the one-two scoring punch with 24 and 21 points respectively.

CHBC was led by three players in double figures. Heckert led the way with 21 points while Wojcik added 18 and Rodman 15. Wojcik led in rebounds with 14 while Carmen Olesen added 11. Heckert led in assists with five and steals with three.

The Bobcats dropped to 8-3 on the season.

 St. Anthony tallied a 39-18 victory over CHBC in junior varsity play. The Bulldogs were led by Lilly Gannaway with 11. CHBC was led by Koda Colman with seven.

Brownstown/St. Elmo ran off to a 22-3 opening quarter lead over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and went on for a 54-24 victory Thursday.

Avery Myers hit three trifectas in the opening quarter run. Two players scored in double figures. Alice Turco led the way with 13 points while Jayne Ireland tallied 10. Myers finished with nine.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ella Kinkelaar with 14 points.

Brownstown/St. Elmo also tallied a victory in junior varsity action, 28-21. BSE was led by Williams with 11. WSS was led by Lauren Longwell with 12 points.

Dieterich held Martinsville scoreless in the opening quarter while taking a 12-0 lead. The Movin' Maroons went on for a 47-17 victory Thursday.

Dieterich held a 25-8 halftime lead and a 41-15 in the third quarter.

Miley Britton was the lone player in double figures for the winners with 15. Cortney Brummer and Ruby Westendorf scored seven each.

Kaylee Niebrugge and Emily Konkel led the way as Teutopolis tallied a 52-28 win over St. Joseph-Ogden.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 12-7 opening quarter lead and led 22-10 at halftime. Konkel then had an eight point third quarter while Niebrugge tallied six.

Niebrugge finished with 16 points while Konkel added 15. Niebrugge pulled down 10 rebounds while Konkel had six. Konkel led in steals with three. Taylor Bueker, Konkel, Katie Kremer, Estella Mette and Summer Wall had an assist each. Konkel had one block.

Neoga was an early leader and never looked back in a 59-30 victory over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Thursday evening.

The Indians held a 17-3 first quarter lead then tallied a 15-9 second period to lead 32-12 at halftime.

Four players scored in double figures for Neoga. Sydney Richards led the way with 15 points while Allison Worman added 14, Haylee Campbell 13 and Brynn Richards 12.

With the victory, Neoga now sports a 10-0 record and returns to action Saturday at Cumberland.

Neoga also claimed the junior varsity win, 32-5.

South Central led by four at halftime over Ramsey and went on for a 64-46 victory Thursday evening.

The Cougars had a 21-6 third quarter run as Brooklyn Garrett scored 11 points while Taegan Webster added six in that quarter.

Webster ended up leading the way with 24 points on 10 field goals and four free throws. Garrett added 21 on four field goals and 13 of 15 at the line.

South Central finished with 22 of 36 free throws while Ramsey shot only a total of eight and connected on four of those.

The Maroons held a 25-18 halftime lead then had a 16-7 third quarter run.

Two players scored in double figures for the Eagles. Camryn Martin and Addy O'Dell finished with 11 points each. Lilly Kessler and Alexis Hetzer added eight each. Kessler led in rebounds with 11.

Newton drops to 0-2 in the Little Illini Conference, 3-6 overall.

The Eagles claimed a 33-20 victory in junior varsity action. Karasyn Martin led with Newton with 13 points. Newton improved to 1-1 in the conference, 5-1 overall.
