The Lake Land College women's basketball team had an extremely successful season.

"We thought we had a chance to be a very competitive team this season," said Coach Dave Johnson. "We knew we had a very talented freshman class. We only had two sophomores back.

"We were a very good defensive team. We were top five in the country in points per game allowed and top six in the country in three point field goal percentage defense. We were very deep playing 10 to 11 players per game."

Three area players are members of the squad and those include Effingham graduates Carsyn Fearday and Abby Weis and Altamont graduate Joanna Schultz.

"Carsyn was incredibly consistent game in and game out," said Johnson. "She is one of the best scorers I have had. She scores in so many ways. and always wanted to take the big shots in close games.

"Abby averaged in double figures and shot the three well. She played outstanding defense. She usually guarded the best scoring guard on the other team.

"Jo worked extremely hard to improve her defense and rebounding. She was very good on offense, shooting the three. She played in 26 games this season."

The Lakers finished with a 30-3 record, winning the Region 24 championship that would have sent them to the National Tournament. However the National Tournament was canceled.

"We beat Danville Area Community College in the quarterfinals of the Region 24 Tournament," said Johnson. " In the Lincoln Land game, we play extremely well. Carsyn hit a huge three in the last minute to help seal the win. In the championship game, we came from 16 points behind in the first half. We were down by 11 at half. We had five players score in double figurse as we came back and won in overtime."

Coach Johnson summed up his players and season.

"This was an extremely coachable group of players," said Johnson. "It was not only an exciting season but one that was fun and enjoyable because of the type of players on our team."
