Altamont Downs WSS in OT, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

Altamont High School scored 10 points in overtime to hand Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg a 58-53 National Trail Conference boys basketball loss Friday evening.

The Indians held a 25-20 halftime lead and led 36-28 lead going into the final quarter. The Hatchets came roaring back with a 20-12 run to tie the contest at 48-48 sending the game into overtime. WSS couldn't sustain the momenum as Altamont pulled out the victory.

Kaden Eirhart led Altamont with 22 points connecting on nine field goals that included three trifectas and was one of three at the line. Aidan Jahraus added 14 points. The Indians improved to 7-1 in the conference, 25-6 overall.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by four players in double figures. Austin Wittenberg led with 14 while Samuel Vonderheide added 13, Jordan Wittenberg 12 and Gavan Wernsing 10. The Hatchets drop to 4-4 in the conference and stand at 13-18 overall.

Altamont claimed the junior varsity contest, 66-41.

At Cowden

St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed a 78-56 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in National Trail Conference play Friday evening.

SEB held a 42-19 halftime lead and that first half was the contest.

Andy Goldsborough was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 28 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Gavyn Smith added 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Jacob Baron rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Jaxson Tish led in assists with four and pulled down seven rebounds. Bryton Pruett had three assists and Jace McWhorter had seven rebounds.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was led by Dakota Gray with 19 points on seven of 13 from the field, three of six from three-point range and two of two at the line. Dylan Taylor chipped in with 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists and three steals. Jadon Robertson had two steals and one blocked shot to go along with nine points.

In a low-scoring contest, North Clay (Louisville) downed South Central, 39-29 in Friday action.

The Cardinals ran off to a 14-4 opening quarter lead and led 19-12 at halftime. South Central pulled within 27-20 going into the final period but North Clay had a 12-9 final period.

Ethan Bible led North Clay with 12 points while Ian Bailey added 10.

Hunter Brandt and Collin Miller had eight points each for the Cougars.

North Clay won the junior varsity match, 38-33. South Central claimed the freshman/sophomore game, 44-34.

At Patoka

Dieterich held a four point lead going into the final period then cut loose with a 23-16 run to down Patoka, 71-60 Friday evening.

The Movin' Marroons trailed Patoka 17-15 after the opening quarter and trailed 34-23 at halftime. The Maroons then went on a tear as Cole NIebrugge knocked in four baskets that included three trifectas for 11 points while Bryce Budde added seven points and Pete Britton hit a three-pointer.

Then it was a parade to the free throw line in the final quarter as the Movin' Maroons connected on 14 freebies at the line for the 23-16 final period.

Budde finished with 21 points while Niebrugge and Collin Hartke added 13 each. Britton 11 and Derek Kuhl 10 as five players finished in double figures.

Woodlawn pulled out a 48-47 victory over Teutopolis in Friday action.

The Cardinals ripped off to a 12-1 opening quarter lead. The Wooden Shoes scored on a free throw by Luke Ungrund.

Woodlawn held a 24-7 halftime lead. The Wooden Shoes had a 21-12 third quarter but were still 12 points down. The Shoes continued their momentum with a 19-8 final period only to fall a point short.

"We got outplayed in the first half," said T-town Coach Chet Reeder. "They were the more aggressive and tougher team to start the game. We started doing things that helpeud s be successful in the second half and we closed the gap but it was too late.

"Luke Ungund had a tremendous effort on the defensive end tonight."

Newton nabbed a 58-48 non-conference victory over Neoga in Friday play.

The Eagles edged out to a 19-16 opening quarter lead behind the seven points of Jarrett Tharp that included two three-pointers.

Newton then had an 8-4 second period to lead 27-20 at halftime. Neoga pulled within two going into the final quarter but Newton got back on track with a 20-12 run for the victory.

Kyle Schafer tallied 17 points while Tharp added 13 and Evan Schafer 11.

Neoga was led by Trevor Roy with 20 and Paci McClure with 27.

Cumberland was led by Wyatt Napier with 20 points and Ross Hemmen with 13.
