CHBC Advances Into Final Four; Shoes Lose in Super-Sectional Battle

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City advanced to the Class 1A  State Tournament with a 70-57 victory over Goreville to win the Salem Super-Sectional Monday evening. SALEM -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City High School is back at state! Coach Carolyn Wendte's team downed Goreville 70-57 in overtime at the Class 1A Salem Super-Sectional Monday evening.

Goreville edged out to a 13-9 opening quarter lead behind double teamming Micah Jones. The Blackcats were keeping an eye on Ava Paruleski from the three-point line. With those two somewhat under control, CHBC's Autumn Riley took over, scoring 12 points in the first half and keeping the Hornets alive.

CHBC came back with an 18-14 second period run to knot the score at 27-27 at halftime. CHBC then edged ahead in the third quarter with a 17-13 run but Goreville came roaring back and tied the score at 55-55 sending the game into overtime.

Riley had a three-point play in overtime and that was the catalyst that drove CHBC to a 15-2 scoring run for the 13-point victory.

Jones finished with 25 points, pulling down 21 rebounds and had seven assists and four steals. Paruleski chipped in with 24 points and A. Riley had 17 points, six rebounds and two steals. CHBC finished with 45 rebounds compared to 41 for Goreville.

Goreville was led by Alison Webb with 29 points and 13 rebounds.

CHBC pushed its record to 26-5 and will now take on Mount Pulaski at 2 p.m. Friday in the Class 1A State Tournament at Redbird Arena in Bloomington.

In other 1A super-sectionals, Mount Pulaski defeated Okawville 43-30, Freeport Aquin won over Elgin Westminster Christian 57-39 and Annawan downed Gilman Iroquois West 45-40. Annawan will meet Freeport Aquin at 12:15 p.m. Friday in the opening game. The four squads will also play Saturday with the losers advancing to the third place game at 12:15 p.m. and the winners to the championship game at 2 p.m.

TICKET SALES for CHBC fans will be today at both Cowden-Herrick and Beecher City high schools. Tickets are $10 each and are general admission. Ticket sales will be as follows: from 9-9:30 a.m., girl basketball players will be allowed to purchase six tickets each; from 9:30-10 a.m. students will be allowed to purchase one ticket; from 10-10:30 a.m., staff will be allowed to purchase two tickets; at 10:30 a.m. tickets will be sold to the general public, four tickets each.

CLASS 2A SALEM SUPER-SECTIONAL

It just wasn't to be for Teutopolis this time around as the Wooden Shoes fell to Nashville 43-36 in the Class 2A Salem Super-Sectional.

Nashville edged out to a 7-3 opening quarter lead and led 14-9 at halftime. Nashville then had a 14-10 third period edge. T-town's attempt at a comeback in the final quarter fell just a little short.

Hannah Yung and Jordi Harre led the winners with 10 points each. T-town was led by Chelsey Hardiek, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, with 10 points.  Cierra Thompson led in rebounds with five. Madeline Hartke had two steals. The Shoes see their season end with a 25-8 record.

The good thing for the Wooden Shoes is the fact they don't lose anyone as they had no seniors on the squad.

Nashville advances to the Class 2A State Tournament at Redbird Arena in Bloomington with a 31-2 record. The Hornettes will face Melrose Park Walther Lutheran at 6:30 p.m. Friday while the second game features El Paso-Gridley taking on Champaign St. Thomas More at 8:15 p.m.

El Paso-Gridley defeated Byron 49-39 to win the Monmouth Super-Sectional while Melrose Park Walther Lutheran downed South Holland Seton Academy 57-47 at River Forest and Champaign St. Thomas More pounded Litchfield 75-36 to win the Springfield Super-Sectional.
