Hearts Win, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Mattoon in Apollo Conference boys basketball action Friday and claimed a 76-71 victory.

 

The Hearts trailed Mattoon 22-16 after the opening quarter. EHS started a comeback with an 18-16 second period as Drew Thompson connected on two three-pointers.

In the third quarter, the Hearts had a 25-11 run to move ahead 59-49 going into the final period then finished out strong for the win.

D. Thompson tallied 30 points for the Hearts, hitting three trifectas in the contest and was 12 of 14 at the line. The Hearts connected on 26 of 44 free throws. Also in double figures was Parker Wolfe with 13.

Neoga picked up a 44-24 National Trail Conference win over St. Elmo/Brownstown Friday.

The Indians stepped out to a 17-6 opening quarter lead and led 23-13 at halftime and 34-18 going into the final period.

Nick Titus led Neoga with 13 points while Chase Banning chipped in with 10.

SEB was led by M. McWhorter with seven points.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg had four players finish in double figures as the Hatchets downed Dieterich in National Trail Conference action, 64-47.

WSS edged ahead 28-21 at halftime then had a 36-20 second half. A. Wittenberg tallied 18 to lead the way while Vonderheide and J. Wittenberg scored 12 each and Wernsing 10.

Dieterich was led by Derek Kuhl with 18.

Altamont put up 84 points and that's what it took to down Vandalia, 84-70 in Friday non-conference action.

The Indians ran off to a 27-10 opening quarterl ead as Aidan Jahraus and Kaden Eirhart provided the one-two scoring punch. Jahraus nailed 15 points while Eirhart contributed the other 12. Both players finished over 30 points. Jahraus led the way with 35 while Eirhart was right behind with 34.

The Vandals had four players in double figures. Walls tallied 20 while Austin added 18, Croy 13 and Goldsmith 10.

Teutopolis had a 14-4 second period surge and went on to beat host Breese Central, 54-41 in action Friday.

The Wooden Shoes and Central were tied at 10-10 after the opening quarter but the Shoes moved ahead 24-14 at halftime. T-town then had a 12-5 third period and held off Central in the final quarter.

Mitch Hardiek scored 13 for the Shoes while Evan Wermert added 11 points and eight rebounds. Luke Ungrund had seven points, five steals and four assists.

"Defense was tremendous for 3 1/2 quarters," said T-town Coach Chet Reeder. "We came down to a hostile atmosphere and played great team basketball. Rebounding and finishing needs to get better but proud of our guys tonight."

Odin came calling and picked up a non-conference victory over South Central Friday, 50-36.

The Cougars held a 15-13 opening quarter lead but Odin came back with an 18-6 second period and never looked back.

Willshire led South Central with 24 points.

Odin had four players in double figures. Finckbone led the way with 17 while Parrish added 15, Wimberly 10 and Shaffer 10.

South Central dropped to 2-1 on the season.

Cumberland handed Oblong a 70-29 loss in action Friday. The Pirates took a 41-19 halftime lead and never looked back.

Hemmen tallied 29 points for the Pirates while Cutts added 19. Hemmen knocked in 16 points in the second period. Cutts scored the bulk of his points in the third quarter with nine.

The Warriors moved ahead 17-14 after the opening quarter and led 36-24 at halftime. The Warriors had a 38-32 second half.

Dallape led the way for the Warriors with 25 points while Livingston added 20 and Hills 10.

North Clay was led by Ethan Bible with 19 and Tyson Jones with 11.

North Clay captured the junior varsity game, 69-62.

Patoka Shootout

North Clay (Louisville) claimed a victory at the Patoka Shootout over Mulberry Grove Saturday.

The Cardinals nabbed a 61-41 win. North Clay ripped out to a 28-5 opening quarter lead and that was the contest.

Luke Fleener scored 21 points while Tyson Jones added 12 and Ethan Bible 10.

Wayne City picked up a 79-69 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

Wayne City took a 19-13 opening quarter lead and led 42-25 at halftime.

SEB was led in scoring by four players in double figures. Jacob Baron led the way with 17 points while Andy Goldsborough added 15, Gavyn Smith 11 and Kaden Tish 10. Baron had five rebounds. Bryton Pruett led in assists with three.
