Breese Mater Dei 36, Effingham 31

This was a frustrating loss for the Hearts, a team that had won 22 straight heading into the contest.

Effingham exploded out of the gate and had a nine-point lead at one point in the first quarter, but some missed shots around the basket and a switch by Mater Dei to a man defense seemed to slow the Hearts.

Effingham was up 15-11 after one quarter, but the Hearts scored just three points in the second period and had no baskets in the quarter. EHS still held Mater Dei to seven points in the period, though, and the game was tied at 18-18 at halftime. Mater Dei narrowly outscored Effingham 8-7 in the third quarter, but were still only ahead 26-25 heading into the final quarter.

The Hearts got behind by five points in the fourth period, but cut the deficit to one.  That was as close as Effingham could get, though, and Mater Dei made some late foul shots to win by five.

Mater Dei won despite making just 12 of 44 shots for 27 percent. A 10-of-11 performance at the foul line was a key for the Knights and they committed just nine turnovers while grabbing 27 rebounds. Mater Dei made two of nine three-point tries.

Effingham made 32 percent of its shots, 10 of just 31 shots in the game. Effingham was 8-of-9 at the line, but committed 15 turnovers and pulled down just 18 rebounds.  The Hearts did make three of four three-point attempts.

Jantzen Michael scored 12 points to lead Effingham in scoring, while Kelli Utz scored eight points, Josie Zerrusen seven, and Felicia Totten and Caitlin Kaufman two each.

Emily Koelling led Mater Dei with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Effingham closes its season with a 26-4 record, setting a Lady Hearts' record for most wins in a season in the process.

Effingham says goodbye to seniors Kelli Utz, Morgan Weiser and Taylor Willis.
