EHS Claims Apollo Win; Bulldogs Fall to Altamont

It was Stombaugh night as Effingham High School handed Paris a 62-40 Apollo Conference boys basketball loss Tuesday evening.

Jake Stombaugh led the way for the Hearts with 17 points and got EHS off in the right direction with seven points in the opening quarter. Josh Stombaugh chipped in with 11, knocking down three trifectas in the game.

The Hearts took a 20-12 opening quarter lead. Clark Williamson scored six in the opening quarter. The lead went to 40-27 by halftime as Alex Carie nailed three trifectas in the second quarter. Then it was time for Jake Stombaugh again with six points in the third quarter and the Hearts led 54-33.

Chipping in with nine points was Williamswon while Leighton Lark tallied eight. Paris was led by Temples with 16 points.

At Altamont

Altamont picked up a National Trail Conference victory by edging Effingham St. Anthony 68-64.

The Bulldogs held a 17-14 opening quarter lead and led 39-29 at halftime. Altamont came roaring back with a 24-18 third period run as Garrett Ziegler went crazy, connecting on two three-pointers, two regular baskets and two free throws for 12 points in the quarter. Jon Kuhns chipped in with four free throws and a basket.

In the final period, the Indians connected on their free throws and outdistanced St. Anthony 15-7 for the win. Altamont hit 12 of 16 free throws in the final period.

Altamont was led by Ziegler with 28 points on six field goals, four three-pointers and four of six at the line. Kuhns tallied 14 and Ryan Mayhaus 13. Mayhaus hit nine of 10 free throws in the contest as the Indians connected on a total of 26 of 33 from the line.

St. Anthony was led by John Schuette with 31 points on 13 field goals and five of six at the line. Also in double figures was Alex Hoelscher with 12.
