However, the Green Wave came roaring back in the third quarter with a 20-8 run  Mattoon ended the third quarter on an eight point run that tied the score at 39-39.

Mattoon moved ahead 42-41 for the first time in the contest in the fourth quarter. But Altamont came back on a Brooke Runge three-pointer. Leah Mayhaus then banged home a basket and a free throw and the Indians were ahead 47-42 with a little over five minutes remaining in the cotnest.

Runge hit a basket and the Indians moved into a 51-44 lead. Mattoon came back within two with a little over a minute remaining but Altamont kept the Green Wave at bay. Mattoon pulled within 55-54 with 15 seconds left and forced a jump ball. It was Altamont's ball with around 10 seconds on the clock.

Altamont's Tinley Mette was fouled and sank two free throws and the lead went to 57-54 and that's where it would end.

Mette tallied 12 for the winners while Leah Mayhaus added 11 and Allyson Hardiek 10. The Indians hit over 50 percent from the field and pulled down 30 rebounds, 20 from the offensive end of the floor. JoAnna Schultz led the way with 10.

"Against Salem defensively we are starting to get places by getting more than two stops in a row and converting them on the offensive end. Our seniors are starting to step up on the defensive end of the floor."
