Teutopolis Falls at Highland Tourney; Newton to Play for LIC Title

HIGHLAND -- Teutopolis High School fell to Breese Mater Dei at the Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening, 51-40.

Mater Dei took a 19-10 opening quarter lead behind the scoring of Emily Koelling with six points and Jamie Voss with five. Mater Dei held a 10-point lead at the half then had a 14-9 third period run to put the game away.

Koelling and Paige Richards finished with 12 points each while Voss added nine. T-town was led by Madeline Hartke with 19 points as she connected on eight field goals and was three of four at the line. Hartke also pulled down nine rebounds and had two steals. Cierra Thompson led the team in steals with five and assists with two.

T-town drops into a 6:30 p.m. game Thursday against Okawville. Hillsboro will take on Carlyle at 5 p.m. The winners advance to the fifth place game Saturday.

In other games Tuesday, Breese Central beat Okawville 51-42 in winner bracket action and in consolation bracket play, Highland downed Vandalia 58-40 and Nokomis won over O'Fallon 61-44.

In action tonight, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City faces Salem at 5 p.m., Highland takes on Nokomis at 6:30 and Nashville faces Belleville West at 8.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton advanced to the championship game of the Little Illini Conference Tournament with a 46-42 overtime win over Olney Tuesday evening. It was the second straight overtime game for the Eagles in the tournament.

The Eagles trailed Olney 15-9 after the opening quarter and 19-12 at halftime. Olney still held a 32-23 lead going into the final quarter. The Eagles then broke loose with a 13-4 run to knot the score and send the game into overtime. In the overtime session, the Eagles kept the momentum and outscored Olney 10-6 for the victory.

Morgan Swingler led Newton with 19 points while Carly Niebrugge added 12. Niebrugge and Andrea Cartright led in rebounding with four each. Newton improves to 16-7 on the season.

The Eagles will face Marshall, a 56-36 winner over Flora, Thursday at 8 p.m. for the championship. Flora and Olney will meet for third place at 6:30 p.m. Tonight's games feature Palestine/Hutsonville against Robinson at 6 p.m. and Casey-Westfield takes on Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 7:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the consolation championship Thursday at 5 p.m.
