ALTAMONT -- Altamont High School stepped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead and went on to down Beecher City 59-49 in National Trail Conference boys basketball action Tuesday evening.

Jon Kuhns was hot in the opening quarter, connecting on four baskets for eight points as the Indians stepped out to the big lead. Kuhns continued with six points in the second period and Altamont held a 32-21 halftime lead.

Beecher City came back with a 19-13 third quarter run to pull within 45-40 going into the final period but Altamont regained its momentum with a 14-9 final period surge.

Kuhns finished with 19 points for the winners while Garrett Ziegler tallied 17. Garrett connected on four field goals, including a three-pointer, and was six of eight at the line. Kuhns hit eight field goals and was three of four at the line.

Beecher City was led by Brady Barnes with 17 and Donovan Riley with 12.

At Brownstown

Stewardson-Strasburg totaled an 86-63 National Trail Conference victory in this high-scoring contest.

The Comets ripped out to a 22-12 opening quarter lead as Brandon Helmuth scored eight points, connecting on two three-pointers, and Justin Fulk also tallied eight.

Helmuth continued his hot scoring with eight more in the second period, six points on free throws, and Dylan Roley scored six. The Comets held a 41-30 halftime lead.

Jason Becker took over the third period scoring for the Comets with 10 points and the lead zoomed to 70-45 going into the final period. Helmuth finished with 22 points while Fulk added 20 and Becker 13.

Brownstown was led by Jacob Behrends with 23 points. Behrends scored 11 of his team's 15 points in the third period. Matt Sefton scored 15 and Nate Matthews 10.

Cowden-Herrick pushed out to a 29-18 halftime lead and went on to beat Patoka 64-48.

The Hornets were led by two players in double figures. Colton Burrus, a 6-foot sophomore, banged home 20 points while Tyson Morgason scored 13. Luke Moore pulled down 21 rebounds, 15 on the defensive end and had four steals and three assists.

Olney's big opening quarter kept the Tigers on track as they downed Cumberland 47-30.

Tate Nohren tallied 21 points for the winners, scoring nine in the opening quarter and six more in the second period.

Cumberland was led by Colton Ingram with nine points and Houston Napier with eight.

St. Elmo blasted out to a 23-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back with a National  Trail Conference victory over Windsor.

Four players hit double figures for the winners. Levi Maxey, a 5-foot-11 junior, tallied 22 while Connor Beasley scored 14 and Reece Wells and Garrett Bartels 11 each.

Windsor was led by Tristan Warner with nine points.

South Central held a 26-20 halftime lead but Neoga came back to hold the Cougars scoreless in the third quarter and take a 28-26 third quarter lead. The Indians then had a 16-5 final quarter run.

Wyatt Krikie and Jake Baker scored 13 points each for the winners. South Central was led by Rudy Hablewitz with 18.

At Palestine

Newton picked up a 64-38 victory over Palestine/Hutsonville in Little Illini Conference action.

The Eagles stepped out to a 23-8 opening quarter lead and led 36-17 at halftime. The Eagles hit 24 of 45 field goals and were nine of 16 at the free throw line. Palestine-Hutsonville connected on only 10 of 31 field goals.

Luke Stone led Newton with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Dylan Davidson had 14 points and five assists.

Midland Trail Conference Tournament

In the Midland Trail Conference Tournament Tuesday evening, Woodlawn trounced Webber Township (Bluford) 61-15, Odin downed North Clay (Louisville) 68-64, Cisne defeated Noible 76-28 and Waltonville beat Clay City 50-34.

Odin edged out to a 16-15 lead on the Cardinals and held a 31-26 halftime lead. The Eagles held a 45-39 lead going into the final period where North Clay outscored Odin 25-23 but fell short. Odin connected on its free throws in that final quarter with 16 of 22 and finished with 19 of 28 for the game.

Odin was led by Wood with 23 and Williams with 13. North Clay was led by Logan Hildebrandt with 28 and Nathan Micklautz with 20.

The tournament continues tonight in consolation bracket play with Webber Township facing North Clay at 5:30 p.m., Noble against Clay City at 7 and Wayne City taking on Sandoval at 8:30.
