Altamont, Cumberland Claim Turkey Tourney Wins

TOLEDO -- Altamont and Cumberland picked up victories in the Cumberland Thanksgiving Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening. The games were played at the high school and junior high school.

 

Altamont pounded Oblong, 67-25 at the junior high. The Indians took a 14-7 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 29-15 at halftime. Then came a big third quarter run as the Indians outdistanced Oblong 23-8.

Biggs led the way for Altamont with 24 points. He connected on 10 field goals that included two three-pointers and hit two free throws. Eirhart and Klitzing scored seven points each.

Host Cumberland captured a 48-42 win over Newton at the high school.

The Pirates ripped off out to a 17-4 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Gerhardt nailed three trifectas in that opening quarter run and finished with 11 points for the game. Leading the way was Wolke with 15 while Butler chipped in with 12.

Newton was led by Schafer with 14 points and Justin Zumbahlen with nine.

Charleston handed Dieterich a 74-44 loss at the high school. The Trojans edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead then opened the game up with a 24-11 second period run to lead 36-22 at halftime. The run continued in the third period with a 30-13 margin.

Five players hit double figures for Charleston as Cory Spour and Issac Miller had 14 each, Zach Finley 11 and Cade Landrus and Hurst had 10 each.

Dieterich was led by Austin Einhorn with 13.

In the other game at the high school, Casey-Westfield defeated Edwards County (Albion), 64-39.

Cumberland and Charleston lead Pool A with 2-0 records while Casey-Westfield and Altamont lead Pool B with 2-0 records.

The tourney will now lay off until Friday when all games will be played at the high school and include Edwards County against Oblong at 3, Newton facing Dieterich at 4:30, Casey-Westfield taking on Altamont at 6 and Cumberland meeting Charleston at 7:30.
