Effingham St. Anthony Junior High School captured second place at the Cumberland Seventh-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament during the weekend.

The Bullpups defeated Stewardson-Strasburg, 30-18. M. Kibler tallied 11 points to lead the winners while Hayes, Wittenberg and Vonderheide had six each for Stew-Stras.

In the championship game, Sigel St. Michael claimed the title by downing St. Anthony, 21-10.

St. Michael was led by Budde with seven points. St. Anthony was led by Coffin with four.

Cumberland edged Stew-Stras 24-23 in the third place contest.

Cumberland held a 14-7 halftime lead. Stew-Stras mounted a 10-4 third quarter comeback only to fall short.

Vonderheide led Stew-Stras with 10 points. Sarver and Shoemaker led Cumberland with seven each.

At Effingham

Effingham handed Neoga two losses in girls basketball action Friday.

The Mustangs won the seventh-grade contest, 42-6. Boone tallied eight to lead Effingham. Neoga was led by Brewster, Richards and Sampson with two each.

In eighth-grade play, Effingham claimed a 30-17 victory. The Mustangs held a 19-5 first quarter lead.

Ella Niebrugge scored 11 for the Mustangs. Campbell led Neoga with 10.

In Saturday action against Teutopolis, Effingham  was a 28-25 winner in the seventh-grade game to improve to 4-1.

The Mustangs' Moser led the way with 10 points. T-town was led by Thoele with six.

In eighth-grade A and B action, T-town won the A game, 23-21. T-town held a 10-7 halftime lead and led 17-12 going into the final quarter.

C. Gibson led the Wooden Shoes with eight points. Effingham was led by Niebrugge with 11.

In the B contest, Effingham was an 18-10 winner. Lilly Waymoth led the Mustangs with seven.
