EHS Claim Boys F/S Wins; T-town Nabs Tourney Title

CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School captured both freshmen and sophomore boys basketball victories over Charleston Monday evening.

The Hearts won the freshman game 45-42. EHS trailed 20-18 at halftime and 32-30 going into the final period. EHS then came to life, outscoring Charleston 15-10 to pull out the three-point victory.

Jared Minor tallied 18 points as he kept the Hearts alive in the opening half with 12 and scored two baskets in the final period.

In the sophomore game, Effingham won 59-51. The Hearts jumped out to a 21-11 opening quarter lead and led 35-24 at halftime. The Hearts were still way ahead after the third period 51-37 but Charleston made a comeback run only to fall short in the final quarter.

Effingham was led by Braydon Bone with 17 and Kevin Daugherty with 15.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis captured the championship of its own Freshman Tournament Monday evening.

T-town defeated Flora 55-46. T-town stepped out to a 20-8 opening quarter lead but Flora came back to pull within 29-25 at halftime. T-town then had a slight 12-11 edge in the third period and outscored the Wolves 14-10 in the final quarter.

K. Smith tallied 16 while D. Smith had 13 and Westendorf 10 for the winners. Flora was led by Leib with 18 and Gocey with 12.
