Bulldogs Nab Ninth Place at Vandalia; Altamont Takes Third

VANDALIA -- In a clash of two National Trail Conference foes Saturday in the Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament, Altamont picked up it's first victory over St. Anthony since 1995.

Altamont outscored the Bulldogs by 14 points over the middle two quarters to secure a 66-57 outcome. Garrett Ziegler's got off to a slow start with only two points on one of four shooting. but got hot in the second quarter hitting five shots in a row enroute to 14 points. St. Anthony was only down by two at halftime and were being lead by Jacob Schuette with 16 points. However Altamont then outscored St. Anthony 17-9 in the third quarter stretching the lead to 10.

Zieglar continued to lead the way for the Indians with seven points. However Schuette picked up his fourth foul and had to sit most of the third quarter. St. Anthony did outscore Altamont by one in the fourth but it was not enough to overtake the Indians.

Altamont improves to 10-2 on the season and St. Anthony falls to 2-10.

St. Anthony 66, Greenville 40

St. Anthony claimed the the ninth place game with a impressive 66-40 victory over Greenville. The Bulldogs ran out to a 15-5 first quarter lead as Jacob Schuette hit four of five shots and scored eight points and Jason Vogel, who was inserted into the starting lineup, scored fiveand points pulled down five rebounds.

St. Anthony continued its hot shooting and use of an effective 1-3-1 zone to extend the lead to 23, 34 11. Neil Williams was the story in the second period, with Alex Hoelscher going to the bench with three fouls. Williams hit a three-pointer and three other shots for nine points, a steal and a rebound.

The third quarter saw John Goeckner score eight points and pull down three rebounds and the Bulldogs extended the lead to 33. Greenville claimed the fourth quarter 21-14 but the damage was done.  Schuette finished the game with 26 points and 8 assists, Williams 16 and Goeckner with 10 points and six rebounds and Vogel contributed seven points and 10 rebounds.

With the win St. Anthony improves to 3-10 and will return to action Saturday in its own Shootout facing Olney.

Altamont Captures Third Place

Altamont defeated Flora 54-45 to capture third place at the Vandalia Holiday Tournament.

The Indians trailed Flora 8-4 after the opening quarter but came back to lead 16-14 at halftime. The Indians then had an 18-11 third quarter run on the strength of  Derek Jahraus' eight points, including two three-pointers, and Ryan Mayhaus' six points.

Jahraus led the Indians with 15 points while Garrett Ziegler tallied 12 and Mayhaus 10.

In the fifth-place game, St. Elmo defeated Maroa-Forsyth 58-56 in overtime. The seventh-place game went to Shelbyville over South Central 30-27. Pana won the championship over Vandalia 56-44.
