Altamont Squeezes Past Cowden-Herrick in Overtime; Area Roundup

ALTAMONT -- Altamont connected on free throws and knocked down a three-pointer in overtime to edge Cowden-Herrick 63-61 in boys basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Indians held a 31-22 halftime lead over Cowden-Herrick. Ryan Mayhaus, a 6-foot-2 senior, tallied eight points and Garrett Ziegler, a 6-foot junior, scored nine points to guide Altamont in the second period.

Cowden-Herrick came back in the third quarter with a 15-10 run to pull within 41-37 going into the final quarter, then outscored the Indians 17-13 to send the game into overtime tied at 54-54.

In the overtime period, Cowden-Herrick tallied three baskets, including a three-pointer for seven points but Altamont hit from the free throw line with six and Ziegler nailed a three-pointer and the Indians won.

Ziegler finished with 27 for the winners while Mayhaus added 18.

Cowden-Herrick had four players in double digits. Luke Moore scored 15 while Seth Barnes, Tyson Morgason and Ethan Schoonover scored 12 each.

At Strasburg

Stewardson-Strasburg held a 26-20 halftime lead but Newton came roaring back with a 21-2 third period run to pull out a 66-39 win over the host squad.

The Eagles finished out with a 25-11 final quarter run to gain the 27-point victory. The Eagles' Luke Stone provided the scoring punch in the third period run with 10 points while Dylan Davidson was the catalyst in the final quarter with 11 points.

Stone, a 6-foot-3 junior, tallied 18 to lead the Eagles while Davidson added 16 and Keith Butler 10. Newton did not connect on a free throw in the contest.

Stew-Stras was led by Justin Fulk with 20 points.

Highland came calling at J.H. Griffin Gymnasium and handed the Wooden Shoes a 48-45 loss. T-town drops to 7-2 on the season.

Highland took a 10-9 opening quarter lead then had a 19-4 second quarter run to lead 29-13 at halftime. The Shoes came back with a 16-9 third period score to pull within 38-29 going into the final quarter then just ran out of time in a big comeback bid.

Ryan Sandschafer, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, led T-town with 18 points while Derek Smith, a 6-2 junior, scored 16.

At Teutopolis

Brody Bence was more than Neoga could handle as Shelbyville defeated the Indians 59-44.

Bence, a 6-foot-7 senior, nailed 14 of 20 from the field and was four of seven at the line for 32 points. Also in double figures was Standerfer with 15.

Neoga was led by Jake Baker with 15.

Edwards County (Albion) edged North Clay (Louisville) 72-69. Edwards County leaped out to a 41-24 halftime lead and the game looked over at that point.

But the Cardinals gained momentum in the second half to pull within 58-41 going into the final quarter then outscored Edwards County 28-14 but fell short.

Edwards County was led by Lowe with 27, Toutloff and Compton with 13 each and Lear with 11. North Clay was led by Nathan Micklautz with 25 and Logan Hildebrand with 20.

At Louisville

Windsor handed Arcola a 58-40 non-conference victory Tuesday.

Tristan Warner, a 6-foot freshman, tallied 19 points while Alex Allen chipped in with 14, Trey Leasher 11 and Hayden Cole 10.

The Blue Devils improved to 2-5 on the season.
