St. Elmo Moves Into Championship of Own Boys Holiday Tourney

ST. ELMO -- St. Elmo High School moved into the championship game of the 53rd Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament.

St. Elmo 42, Beecher City 33

St. Elmo trailed Beecher City after the opening quarter 11-9 and at halftime 20-14. But St. Elmo came roaring back with a 12-2 third quarter surge as Levi Maxey tallied five and Ben Davis connected on a three-pointer.

Maxey then tallied 10 points in the final period as St. Elmo had a 16-11 edge for the victory. Maxey, a 5-foot-11 junior, finished with 21 points to lead St. Elmo.

Beecher City was led by Donnie Riley with 10. Beecher City drops into the third place game against either Altamont or South Central Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

St. Elmo will meet either Altamont or South Central for the championship Saturday at 8 p.m.

Brownstown 86, Mulberry Grove 54

In a consolation bracket game, Brownstown broke away from Mulberry Grove to take an 86-54 victory.

Three players finished in double figures for the Bombers. Austin Hunter, a senior, scored 28, 18 in the second half. Matt Sefton scored 19 and Jacob Behrends 15. Behrends hit two field goals and 11 free throws.

Mulberry Grove was led by Miller with 14, Phillips with 12 and Dawson with 10.

Brownstown will now face the winner of the Cowden-Herrick vs. Ramsey game for the consolation championship Saturday at 5 p.m. Mulberry Grove drops into the seventh-place game and will face the loser of the Cowden-Herrick vs. Ramsey game at 3:30 p.m. for seventh-place Saturday.
