The game was a battle of the unbeatens as Effingham High School played host to Charleston in Apollo Conference girls basketball competition Thursday.

The Hearts came out on top 53-47 to remain in the undefeated category.

Coach Jeff Schafer's outfit moved ahead early with a 17-11 opening quarter. The Hearts went on a 10-0 run to push into a 17-8 lead before the Trojans came back with three points. Abby Weis knocked in a three-pointer and had a regular basket along with a free throw for six points. Aly Armstrong put in a three-pointer and Bria Barr hit a basket and two free throws.

Charleston came back with a 9-6 second period to pull within 23-20 at halftime.

The contest was a defensive effort as the Hearts pushed Charleston into 17 turnovers. EHS finished with 12 turnovers.

The Hearts maintained control in the third period and pushed the lead to five going into the final quarter.

The Trojans came to life, knocking in a couple of three-pointers in the final quarter and Shae Littleford hit a basket and four free throws. Charleston pulled within a point after connecting on five straight free throws. A lane violation knocked out the tying free throw and the Hearts then made its own free throws to pull away.

The Hearts had three players score in double figures as Weis finished with 14 while Armstrong and Carsyn Fearday tallied 10 each.

"They're good," said Schafer. "They keep coming at you and coming at you. I thought we did a nice job but we need to make our layups."

Leading Charleston were Bernie Jackson with 15 and Littleford with 14.
