The St. Anthony Bulldogs advanced to the first place game of their own Thanksgiving Tournament with a 65-59 win Friday night over their crosstown rivals, the Effingham Hearts.

The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. We will also have DVD and flash drive copies of the game available next week.

St. Anthony took the early lead and were up by eight after one quarter, 22-14. Alex Deters was the driving force for the Bulldogs, scoring 13 of those 22 first quarter points.

The Bulldogs extended the lead in the second period, 14-8, to lead 36-22 at halftime.

Effingham began a comeback in the third quarter, though, outpointing the Bulldogs 19-13 in the third quarter to move within 49-41 heading to the final period. The Hearts' Landon Wolfe and Mason Hull combined for 16 of those 19 third quarter points.

The Hearts continued their comeback and erased the rest of the Bulldogs' lead, until St. Anthony proved themselves clutch at the foul line, hitting 8 of 10 to hold on for the six-point win.

The victory left both teams 2-1 in the tournament. Since the tie-breakers had come down to point differential, St. Anthony had to win the game by five, and got it done by six to advance to the championship game, while Effingham will play for third place.

Both teams shot very well, St. Anthony making 22 of 42 for 52% and Effingham making 21 of 41 for 51%. St. Anthony was 6 of 11 on threes, while Effingham was 2 of 8 on threes. Each team made 15 foul shots, the Bulldogs on 19 tries, the Hearts on 23 attempts.

Effingham won the rebound battle, 23-15, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over just 11 times to 14 for Effingham.

Effingham's Landon Wolfe led all scorers with 33 points on 14 of 22 shooting and 5 of 7 from the line, along with 11 rebounds. Mason Hull added 19 for the Hearts, on 5 of 9 shooting and 7 of 7 from the line.
