EHS, Newton Open With Wins At Bob Kerans Tourney

NEWTON -- Effingham High School opened competition in the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament with a resounding victory over Flora Monday evening.

The Hearts ran off to a 23-0 opening quarter lead and never looked back in the 61-24 win.

Carsyn Fearday tallied 15 points, hitting four field goals and was six of nine at the line. She also had five rebounds. Skyler Schafer scored 10 points. Natalie Carie led in assists with eight.

"We got off to a great start in the first quarter," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We need to adjust to the game. We did a lot of nice things tonight. We moved the ball well. Natalie had eight assists and everyone contributed."

The second game was much closer as Newton edged Vandalia 55-54.

The Eagles took a 12-9 opening quarter lead and led 26-17 at halftime. Vandalia came back with a 13-10 third period and had a 24-19 final quarter.

Bierman tallied 20 for the winners while Carr chipped in with 11. Harris had four assists, four steals and four rebounds. Stone and A. Russell had five boards each.

The tourney continues tonight as Effingham faces Altamont at 6 and Newton takes on Flora at 7:30.

At Dieterich

Sandoval captured a 48-44 win over Dieterich in regular season action Monday evening.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 7-6 opening quarter lead but Sandoval came back with a 15-8 second period. The two squads played to a 12-12 third quarter and Sandoval led 33-27 going into the final quarter. Dieterich had a 17-15 run but just missed.

Vahling tallied 12 for Dieterich while Robards scored 11. Vahling had seven rebounds and Robards added six. Britton had five steals.

At Farina

South Central put together a 26-17 victory over Mulberry Grove for its first win of the season Monday evening.

"The girls worked hard as they always do," said South Central Coach Gary Kapper. "We again showed improvement in some areas. We did have a lot of unforced turnovers which we need to work on. We had a lot of good shots taken but they did not fall. As we play more games, those hopefully will go down."

Katlyn Hilmes led the winners with 15 points. She connected on three trifectas. The Cougars improve to 1-2.

At Neoga

Neoga dropped to 1-2 on the season with a 53-40 loss at the hands of Marshall Monday evening.

Marshall took a 29-24 halftime lead then had a 12-3 third period to put the game away.

Titus scored 12 points while Banning chipped in with 11 for Neoga. The Indians will return to action in the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Thanksgiving Tournament tonight.
