Neoga, Newton, BSE, N. Clay Claim Girls Victories

NEOGA -- Neoga High School edged Arcola 38-35 in girls high school basketball action Thursday evening.

Arcola edged out to an 18-17 halftime lead but Neoga came back with a 14-10 third period and held on for the 38-35 victory.

Banning tallied 15 as the lone player in double figures for the Indians. Neoga improves its record to 1-1 on the season and plays host to Marshall Monday.

Newton pounded Robinson in a non-conference contest Monday, 43-16.

The  Eagles held an 18-4 halftime lead and never looked back. Frohning led the way with 17 points while Grunloh chipped in with 10. Frohning had six steals and five rebounds while Harris had three assists and three rebounds and Carr five boards.

Newton is now 1-1 and will host the Bob Kerans Tournament beginning Monday.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity contest 46-18.

BSE held a 44-11 halftime lead. Four players scored in double figures. Claire Wilhour had 18 while Deana Shelton scored 13, Olivia Campbell 12 and Dana Shelton 11. Wilhour also led in rebounds with seven and had four steals. Campbell added four steals.

CORL took a 22-4 opening quarter lead and led 41-13 at halftime.

Dieterich was led in scoring by Gracie Britton with eight points. Cassie Vahling led in rebounds with five and steals with three. Britton also had three steals. Andrea Bierman led in assists with three. The Maroons fall to 0-2.

Christ Our Rock Lutheran also nabbed the junior varsity contest 44-13.

North Clay (Louisvile) handed South Central a 46-6 loss in National Trail Conference action Thursday evening.

The Cardinals stepped out to a 9-0 opening quarter lead and led 17-3 at halftime. The Cardinals held South Central scoreless in the third quarter.

Madi Craig tallied 10 points to lead North Clay.

South Central drops to 0-2 in the conference, 0-2 overall.

"We played better at times than we did in our first game Monday," said South Central Coach Gary Kapper. "Some things we worked on we had some improvement but not the consistency we need. The girls never quit working and continued to go hard the whole game."
