C-H Edges St. Elmo, T-town, Altamont Win; Area Boys Roundup

COWDEN -- Cowden-Herrick High School edged St. Elmo 52-50 in boys basketball competition Tuesday evening.

The Hornets trailed St. Elmo 14-11 after the opening quarter but had a run in the second period to lead 25-23 at halftime. The Eagles came out in the third period to pull ahead 38-37 but Cowden-Herrick owned the final period with a 15-12 run to pull out the two-point win.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Tyson Morgason tallied 12 while Ethan Schoonover had 11 and Luke Moore 10. The Hornets hit 38.3 percent from the field but were 11 of 12 at the line for 91.7 percent.

St. Elmo also had three players in double figures. Levi Maxey led the way with 15 points while Garrett Bartels chipped in with 12 and Conner Beasley with 11. The Eagles hit 31.1 percent from the field and only two of seven free throws for 28.6 percent.

At Strasburg

A last second shot gave Arcola its first victory of the season, 49-47 over Stewardson-Strasburg.

The Purple Riders edged out to a 14-13 first quarter lead but Stew-Stras pushed ahead at halftime 24-23. The Comets held a 37-35 lead going into the final quarter. Arcola pushed ahead in the fourth quarter when the Comets' Brandon Helmuth connected on a three-pointer with 10 seconds on the clock to tie the score at 47-47. But Arcola came right back as freshman Kolin Seaman nailed the game-winner from the baseline.

Stew-Stras hit only four of 11 at the line while Arcola was 12 of 20. The Comets fell to 2-2 while Arcola improved to 1-2.

Seaman finished with 12 points for the winners. Stew-Stras was led by Justin Fulk with 17.

At Strasburg

At Salem

Teutopolis put together a 21-18 second half run and downed Salem 57-52 Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes jumped out to a 23-16 opening quarter lead but the Wildcats came back with an 18-13 run to pull within 36-34 at halftime. T-town then had a slight 11-9 third period edge and outscored the Wildcats 10-9 in the final quarter.

The Wooden Shoes had three players finish in double digits. Derek Smith a 6-foot-2 senior, hit seven field goals which included three trifectas, for 18 points. Reed Hardiek tallied 15 and Devin Falbe 11. Hardiek hit four three pointers as the Shoes finished with 10. T-town only attempted three free throws and connected on one.

T-town improves to 5-1 on the season and isn't back in action until next Tuesday against Effingham.

At Salem

At Altamont

Windsor stepped out to a 16-9 opening quarter lead but Altamont's defense toughened up and held Windsor to only 23 points over the next three quarters in taking a 70-39 National Trail Conference victory.

The Indians held a 26-23 halftime lead then outscored the Blue Devils 44-16 in the second half. Ryan Mayhaus led the way with 19 points while Jake Seidel chipped in with 10. Ten Altamont players scored in the contest.

Windsor was led by Tristan Warner with 15 points. The Blue Devils fall to 0-4 on the season.

At Neoga

Dieterich came calling and handed Neoga a 65-60 loss in National Trail Conference action Tuesday evening.

Dalton Hinterscher guided the Movin' Maroons to the win with 35 points. He connected on 11 field goals, including four three-pointers, and nine free throws and went over the 1,000 point career total with a three-pointer in the third quarter. Also in double figures was Brandon Westjohn with 13.

Neoga was led by Jake Baker with 20 points, Michael Baker 10 and Riley Walk 10 as the Indians drop to 0-3 in the conference, 1-6 overall.

Dieterich is now 1-1 in the conference, 5-3 overall.

Newton remained unbeaten on the season by trouncing Cumberland 72-35 in Little Illini Conference play.

The Eagles held a 38-17 halftime lead and outscored the Pirates 34-18 in the second half to improve to 2-0 in the conference, 7-0 overall.

Dylan Davidson led the Eagles with 17 points while Elijah Knepper tallied 14.

Cumberland was led by Trevor Brumleve with nine points. The Pirates drop to 0-2 in the conference, 2-6 overall.

At Newton

North Clay (Louisville) picked up a Midland Trail Conference win over Clay City, 54-46.

The Cardinals took a 16-4 opening quarter lead but Clay City came roaring back to pull within 20-18 at halftime. The Wolves then had an 18-14 third period run to lead 36-34 going into the final period. North Clay then had a 20-10 final period run.

Lawon Britton led the winners with 17 points while Logan Hildebrand tallied 13 and Nathan Micklautz 10.
