The National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament opened play Tuesday evening at Brownstown.

South Central downed Effingham Sacred Heart in the opening contest.

The second game went to Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor over Neoga 29-26. SSW led 16-10 at halftime. Neoga came back with a 16-13 second half but couldn't make up that opening half deficit.

Kinkeklaar tallied 15 to lead the winners. It was the first win of the season in 13 games for SSW.

Neoga was led by Richards with 18 points.

In the third game Tuesday evening, Altamont defeated North Clay (Louisville).

Tonight's games feature top-seeded Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against South Central at 5:30 followed by Sigel St. Michael meeting Stew-Stras/Windsor at 6:45 and Altamont facing North Clay at 8.

At Effingham

Effingham nabbed two victories over Centralia in action Tuesday evening.

The Mustangs won the seventh-grade contest 50-13 to improve to 7-0 on the season. Effingham held a 24-7 halftime lead. Woomer tallied 11 to lead Effingham as nine players scored in the contest.

In the eighth-grade game, Effingham edged Centralia, 41-36. The Mustangs stepped out to a 16-6 opening quarter lead then held off Centralia for the win.

Sowell tallied 18 for the Mustangs who improve to 5-2.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony and Sigel St. Michael split victories Tuesday evening.

The Bullpups won the eighth-grade contest 27-23. The score was tied at 18-18 at halftime and 20-20 going into the final period. St. Anthony then had a 7-3 run. Guy led St. Anthony with 10 points. Niebrugge led the Sharpshooters with 13.

In the seventh-grade game, St. Michael claimed a 33-13 victory. Niebrugge scored nine for the winners. St. Anthony was led by Fearday with eight.

At Newton

Jasper County dropped two losses to Flora in action Tuesday.

Flora won the seventh-grade contest 22-4. Flora held a 12-4 halftime lead then held Jasper County scoreless in the second half.

MacKenzie Miller had two points to lead Jasper County.

In the eighth-grade game, Flora won 39-27.

Leading Jasper County were Sydney Dobbins with 11 and Amber Russell with 10.
