NEWTON -- Flora and Newton picked up opening round victories at the Bob Kerans Newton Girls Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

The tourney continues Wednesday as Effingham faces Mount Zion at 6 p.m. and Newton squares off against Flora at 7:30.

Flora 54, Effingham 48

The Wolves zipped out to a fast start taking a 16-9 opening quarter lead on Effingham and leading 29-18 at halftime. The Hearts came back in the second half but couldn't overcome that first half deficit.

Meg Hout tallied 15 for the winners while Brooke Bayles scored 13 and Crimson Jones 13.

Effingham was led by Josie Zerrusen with 12 points and six rebounds, Kelli Utz with eight points and six rebounds and Caitlin Kaufman with eight points.

Newton 47, Cumberland 20

Newton also had a quick start with an 18-5 run on the Pirates in the opening quarter and outscored Cumberland 21-10 in the second half.

Morgan Swingler was the lone player in double figures for the Eagles with 15. Cumberland was led by Kamisha Holsapple with 10.
