Four Games Played in Cumberland Tourney

TOLEDO -- Cumberland, Oblong, Dieterich and Newton were opening round winners in the Cumberland Boys Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

The tourney continues tonight with Martinsville facing Dieterich at 6 p.m., Hume Shiloh taking on Chrisman at 6 p.m., Cumberland squaring off against Palestine/Hutsonville at 7:30 p.m. and  Oblong against Newton at 7:30 p.m.

Cumberland 52, Martinsville 36

Cumberland stepped out to a 14-8 opening quarter lead on Martinsville and led 23-18 at halftime. The Pirates then had an 18-7 third period run to put the contest away.

T. Brumleve led the Pirates with 18 points while Wolke chipped in with 10.

Oblong  63, Chrisman 48

Oblong held a 26-15 halftime lead and took a 24-15 final period run to claim the victory. The final quarter run was fueled by trips to the free throw line as Oblong was perfect with 10 of 10. Chase Mendenhall tallied eight in the quarter and Anthony Johnson finished with 10 in the period.

Oblong had three players hit double digits. Mendenhall tallied 20, Johnson 19 and Collin Meese 11. Chrisman was led by Chris Hoult with 21 and Ty Bolen with 15.

Dieterich 70, Palestine/Hutsonville 62

The score was tied at 11-11 after the opening quarter before Dieterich edged ahead 33-30 at halftime. The Movin' Maroons then came out in the third period with a 22-16 run and held off Palestine/Hutsonville in the final quarter.

Hinterscher was the guiding force with 36 points for the Maroons. Westjohn chipped in with 15. Palestine/Hutsonville was led by Webster with 18 and Alspach with 11.

Newton 58, Hume Shiloh 40

Newton trailed Hume Shiloh 12-4 after the opening quarter but came roaring back with a 25-10 tear in the second period. Elijah Knepper connected on four three-pointers in the quarter and finished with 17 of the 25 points. Newton then had a 17-4 third period run to lead 46-26 going into the final period.

The Eagles were led by Knepper with 21, Lucas Stone with 11 and Dylan Davidson withi 10. Hume Shiloh was led by Cyrus Furgeson with 11.
