Flora Claims Bob Kerans Girls Tourney Title

NEWTON -- Flora High School finished 4-0 in the Bob Kerans Newton Girls Basketball Tournament to capture the championshp Friday evening in the round robin affair.

The Wolves came away with a 30-25 victory over host Newton and that gave them the perfect record to claim the tourney title.

Carder led Flora with nine points while Jones added eight. Hartrich led Newton with 15.

Effingham pounded Cumberland 58-10 and ended with a second place finish in the tournament. The Hearts had a 3-1 record. EHS held the Pirates scoreless in the first quarter, taking a 17-0 lead and led 34-3 at halftime.

Shelby Myers tallied 16 for the Hearts.

In other the other game Friday, Altamont trounced Cumberland 64-31. The Indians led 21-6 after the opening quarter. Mayhaus scored 15 and Paquette 14 for the Indians.

Newton finished third with a 2-2 record while Altamont was fourth at 1-3 and Cumberland fifth at 0-4.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Grace Hartrich (Newton, also the MVP), Abby Frohning (Newton), Shelby Myers (Effingham), Carsyn Fearday (Effingham), Crimson Jones (Flora) and Allison Carder (FLora).
