SIGEL -- Altamont and St. Elmo/Brownstown moved into the championship of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament with victories Tuesday evening at Sigel St. Michael.

Altamont, seeded fifth, handed top-seeded Sigel St. Michael a 43-33 loss. The two teams played to a 10-10 opening quarter tie and both scored eight in the second period. Altamont moved ahead with 14-6 third period run.

Biggs scored 18 and Kuhlman 10 for the winners. St. Michael was led by Wolke with 14.

In the second game, St. Elmo/Brownstown downed Cowden-Herrick 36-28. Philpot led the winners with 14 points. Cowden-Herrick was led by D. Burks with 23.

The tournament comes to a close Thursday as Windsor faces Dieterich for the consolation championship at 5:30 p.m. followed by St. Michael taking on Cowden-Herrick for third place at 6:45 and Altamont facing SEB for the championship at 8.

At Greenville

Effingham St. Anthony moved into the consolation bracket championship game of the 67th Annual James Burke Memorial Tournament with a victory Tuesday evening.

The Bullpups downed Salem 36-19. There was no other information turned in on the game.

In the opening game, Hillsboro edged Troy Triad 22-21. Hillsboro faces St. Anthony at 5 p.m. Friday for the consy title.

In tonight's games, Effingham meets Aviston at 6 p.m. and Carlyle takes on Greenville at 7 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 7 p.m. while the losers play for third place at 6 p.m.
