T-town Advances in Highland Girls Tourney, Newton Drops LIC Tourney Game

HIGHLAND -- Teutopolis High School picked up a first round victory in the 29th Annual Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

Hillsboro leaped out to a 21-9 opening quarter lead on the Wooden Shoes. T-town then pulled back within 30-25 with a 16-9 second quarter run. Jamie Sandschafer connected on five points for the Shoes.

Coach Laurie Thompson's squad then ran off a 25-9 third period to lead 50-39 going into the final quarter. T-town finished out with a 73-50 victory.

Four players scored in double figures for the Shoes. Sandschafer finished with 21 while Reagan Drees added 19, Hannah Bueker 14 and Chelsey Hardiek 10. Bueker and Hardiek led in rebounds with five each. Bueker and Drees had three steals each.

In other games, Breese Central defeated Carlyle 78-58, Breese Mater Dei won over Trenton Wesclin 52-39, Salem edged O'Fallon 60-57, Nashville downed Troy Triad 42-36, Belleville West defeated Nokomis 58-34, Taylorville claimed a 59-40 win over Belleville Althoff and Highland won over Okawville 50-24.

Today's schedule includes Carlyle vs. Hillsboro at 4 p.m, Trenton Wesclin against O'Fallon at 5:30, Teutopolis taking on Breese Central at 7 and Breese Mater Dei against Salem at 8:30.

At Lawrenceville

Newton faced Flora in opening round play at the Little Illini Conference Tournament and fell to the Wolves 51-25 Saturday.

Flora took a 35-14 halftime lead and never looked back. Jones scored 29 for the winners.

Newton was led by Davidson with six points. The Eagles are 12-9 on the season.

In other games Saturday, Paris defeated Red Hill (Bridgeport) 54-26, Marshall downed Casey-Westfield 65-37 and Lawrenceville edged Olney 46-40.

The tourney continues today as Newton meets Edwards County at 7 p.m. Olney will take on Robinson.
