CARBONDALE -- Playing on a super-sectional stage for the first time ever, Dieterich High School came up just short in its bid for its first state tournament berth in boys basketball competition Tuesday evening at the Class 1A Carbondale Super-Sectional.

The Movin' Maroons fell to Sesser-Valier 57-48. The Red Devils stepped out to a 20-11 opening quarter lead and held a 31-19 halftime lead. But the Maroons didn't panic, especially after coming back to beat Effingham St. Anthony in the sectional championship.

The Maroons were having trouble from the free throw line and finished with 13 of 21. But that didn't stop Coach Jeff Staser's squad from pulling within four with 2:21 showing.

However, Sesser-Valier players remained calm during the run and connected on eight of 19 three-pointers in the contest and were 15 of 19 at the line.

Tyler Baxter led the Red Devils with 16 points while Nick Marlo chipped in with 14. Nick McCarty led in rebounds with 11. Sesser-Valier heads to the Class 1A State Tournament at Peoria Friday with a 23-10 record and will face Heyworth, a 72-62 winner over Champaign St. Thomas More, at 12:15 p.m.

In the other state contest, Mendon Unity takes on Mooseheart at 2 p.m. The finals are set for Saturday with the third place contesst at 12:15 p.m. and the championship at 2.

Dieterich was led by Tanner Traub with 18. He was the lone Dieterich player in double figures. Alex Bohnhoff had five steals and four assists. Devin Aherin led in rebounds with eight. The Maroons end the season with a 23-9 record and their best run in school history.
