Cardinals' Chris Carpenter Retires

(St. Louis, MO) -- Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter is calling it a career. The right-hander is officially retiring.  General manager John Mozeliak revealed the news at a Wednesday press conference. The 2005 Cy Young winner missed most of the 2012 season and all of 2013 due to injury.  The 38-year-old helped the Cards to World Series championships in 2006 and 2011. In 15 seasons, Carpenter had 144 wins with a career ERA of 3.76 while pitching for Toronto and St. Louis.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny isn't going anywhere anytime soon. St. Louis has inked the skipper to a three-year contract extension through the 2017 season.  Since taking over for legendary manager Tony La Russa, Matheny has led the Cards to the playoffs in both of his seasons at the helm. The former catcher guided the club to the World Series this past season, losing to the Boston Red Sox in six games.
