Gomes' Blast Lifts Red Sox Past Cardinals

(St. Louis, MO) -- Jonny Gomes belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to send the Red Sox to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals in Game Four of the World Series from St. Louis.  Gomes says he was happy to have the chance to play and contribute.

Gomes was inserted into the lineup just before the game as Shane Victorino was scratched with back tightness. David Ortiz went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored twice as Boston evened the best-of-seven series up at two games apiece. Clay Buchholz allowed an unearned run over four innings while Felix Doubront stepped in and got the win with two-and-two-thirds innings of one-run ball in relief. Koji Uehara notched the save in the ninth for the Sox, who guaranteed themselves a trip back to Boston for Game Six. Carlos Beltran and Matt Carpenter each singled in a run for St. Louis while Lance Lynn allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. Game Five of the series is Monday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

The Cardinals send ace Adam Wainwright to the hill for Game Five of the World Series tonight. Wainwright was roughed up for five runs in as many innings in Game One of the series. He will face Boston's Game One starter Jon Lester. First pitch is set for 7:07 from Busch Stadium.

 

Two Cubs Nominated For Gold Gloves

A pair of Cubs could add to their trophy collection Tuesday night. First baseman Anthony Rizzo and second baseman Darwin Barney have been nominated for Rawlings Gold Glove Awards. The winners will be announced Tuesday at 6 p.m. on ESPN2. No White Sox players were named finalists.
