Cubs' Big Seventh Sinks Marlins

(Chicago, IL) -- Donnie Murphy capped off a four-run seventh inning rally with the go ahead two-run homer as the Cubs beat the Marlins 9-7 from Wrigley Field. The Cubs clubbed four home runs as a team. Carlos Villanueva picked up the "W" in relief, throwing one inning giving up one run on two hits. Kevin Gregg closed out the game for his 29th save as the North Siders avoided the sweep. Ryan Webb lost his sixth game of the year. Adeiny Hechavarria hit a grand slam and Logan Morrison had a two-run homer for the Marlins, who had its three-game win streak snapped.  

Adams Lifts Cards Past Reds

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Matt Adams hit a go-ahead solo homer in the top of the 16th inning to lift the Cardinals past the Reds 5-4 at Great American Ball Park. Adams also hit a solo shot in the top of the 14th, but the Reds answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI-single by Zack Cozart. Adams came in as a replacement for Cards first baseman Allen Craig, who left in the fourth inning with a sprained left foot. Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday also plated a run each for the Redbirds, who will try to split the four-game set on Thursday. Carlos Martinez picked up the win in relief. Brandon Phillips homered for the Reds, who now trail the Cardinals by 2 1/2 games for the top wild card spot. Logan Ondrusek suffered his first loss.

Yankees Sweep White Sox

(Bronx, NY) -- Robinson Cano went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI as the Yankees held on to beat the White Sox 6-5 to sweep the three-game series in the Bronx. Brett Gardner had a two-run triple during a four-run fourth inning for the Yankees, who have won five of their last six games. CC Sabathia tossed 7 1/3 innings of three-run ball as he improved his mark to 13-11. After the White Sox scored four runs in the eighth to pull within one, Mariano Rivera came in and recorded the final four outs for his 41st save. Avisail Garcia and Josh Phegley drove in two runs apiece in Chicago's sixth straight loss. Erik Johnson allowed five runs, three earned, in six frames to suffer the loss in his Major League debut.

 

Ortiz Joins 2,000 Hit Club

(Boston, MA) -- David Ortiz is in the 2,000 hit club. "Big Papi" went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored in Boston's 20-4 rout of Detroit on Wednesday to surpass 2,000 hits for his career. Ortiz said it was a special night for him. His two long balls give him 427 for his career, which moves him past Billy Williams for 47th on the all-time home run list. The Red Sox took two-of-three in the series and now hold a 2 1/2 game lead on the Tigers for the best record in the American League.

 

A's Rout Rangers

(Oakland, CA) -- Josh Donaldson belted a three-run homer to cap a six-run sixth inning as the Athletics cruised past the Rangers 11-4 in the rubber match of a three-game series in Oakland.  The teams are tied once again atop the AL West at 80-and-59 with 23 games left. Brandon Moss, Daric Barton and Coco Crisp all hit two-run homers for the A's, who have won five of their last six games. Crisp drove in four runs total in the victory. Jarrod Parker gave up two runs over six innings as he improved to 11-6. Brett Anderson pitched the final three frames for his second save. Geovany Soto went deep and Leonys Martin plated a run and scored a run for Texas, which has lost three-of-four. Yu Darvish allowed five runs in five frames as he fell to 12-7.

 

Astros Top Twins In Ninth

(Houston, TX) -- Trevor Crowe singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Astros prevailed over the Twins 6-5 at Minute Maid Park. Ryan Doumit's solo homer in the top of the ninth had tied the game at five for Minnesota. Crowe and Brandon Barnes each drove in two runs for Houston, which salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Erik Bedard blew the save but got credit for the win.  Brian Duensing suffered the loss for the Twins. Alex Presley went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer for Minnesota, which had won three in a row and four of five.

 

Mets Power Past Braves

(Atlanta, GA) -- Andrew Brown hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Lucas Duda went 3-for-5 with a solo shot as the Mets beat the Braves 5-2 at Turner Field. Dillon Gee allowed just four hits and one run over seven innings to improve to 11-9 with the win. Gee also singled in a run to help his own cause. New York built a 5-0 lead in the third inning and held on from there, salvaging the finale of the three-game series. LaTroy Hawkins posted his seventh save. Kameron Loe allowed 11 hits and all five run in less than five innings to take the loss.  Freddie Freeman homered in defeat.

 

D-backs Edge Blue Jays

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Just one day after being promoted from Triple-A Buffalo as September callups, Luis Perez and Jeremy Jeffress were thrown right into the fire on Wednesday, working out of the bullpen late in a tie game. But while both relief pitchers showed glimpses of why the club wants to see what they can do this month, the end result left the team on the wrong side of a walk-off victory in 10 innings. After Perez allowed a one-out single in the 10th, Jeffress surrendered consecutive hits, the latter of which was a lined rope off the bat of Willie Bloomquist past a drawn in Toronto infield to drive in the game-winning run, as the Blue Jays coughed up an early lead and failed to complete the three-game sweep, falling 4-3 to the D-backs at Chase Field.

 

Indians Snip Orioles

(Cleveland, OH) -- The Indians answered the Orioles rally with a two-run bottom of the fifth inning and held on for a 6-4 victory against the O's in the finale of a three-game set from Progressive Field. Yan Gomes one-run double put Cleveland ahead for good as the Indians moved past the O's in the AL wild card standings. The Tribe is 3 1/2 games behind the Rays for the second spot. Reliever Bryan Shaw grabbed the win and Chris Perez nailed down his 22nd save. Baltimore tied the game in the top of the fifth inning off the bat of Manny Machado, who smacked a three-run homer. Adam Jones hit a solo shot the inning before. Kevin Gausman took the loss.

 

M's Slip By Royals

(Kansas City, MO) -- Kendry Morales hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to give the Mariners a 6-4 win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Seattle had dropped the first two of the four-game set. M's highly regarded prospect Taijuan Walker gave up four runs in five innings. Reliever Lucas Luetge earned his first win and Danny Farquhar locked up his 12th save. Kansas City had a three-game winning streak come to an end. The Royals erased a 4-0 deficit with a four-run fourth inning. Jarrod Dyson keyed the rally with a two-run single.  Aaron Crow was handed the loss.

 

Nats Nip Phillies

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Stephen Lombardozzi plated the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning as the Nationals nipped the Phillies 3-2 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Ryan Zimmerman homered in the seventh to tie the game, while Adam LaRoche drove in the other run on a sac-fly in the first for the Nats, who have won three of their last four. Jordan Zimmermann gave up just two runs over seven innings as he improved to 16-8. Rafael Soriano closed it out for his 38th save. Cesar Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and a walk for the Phils, who have lost four-of-five. Roy Halladay tossed six innings of one-run ball but did not factor in the decision. Jacob Diekman suffered the loss.

 

Sandoval, Giants Rock Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- Pablo Sandoval left the yard three times and drove in six runs to lead the Giants to a 13-5 spanking of the Padres in the finale of a three-game set at Petco Park.  Brandon Crawford, Hunter Pence and Hector Sanchez all also hit homers. Eleven of San Francisco's 13 runs were accounted for by home runs. Tim Lincecum picked up his ninth win.  Ronny Cedeno and Chase Headley hit long balls in the loss. San Diego wasn't able to complete a three-game sweep. Eric Stults allowed seven runs in less than five innings to fall to 8-13.

Myers, Rays Edge Halos

(Anaheim, CA) -- Wil Myers homered twice and drove in all three runs as the Rays edged the Angels 3-1 in Anaheim. Jeremy Hellickson fired five-and-a-third scoreless innings as he improved his mark to 11-8. Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth for his 32nd save. The Rays have won the last two in the series after losing the opener of the four-game set. Chris Iannetta homered in the seventh for the Halos, who have dropped two in-a-row after a five-game winning streak. Jered Weaver allowed all three runs in seven frames as he slipped to 9-8.

 

Brewers Cruise Past Pirates

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Khris Davis clubbed a two-run homer as the Brewers cruised past the Pirates 9-3 to avoid a three-game sweep at Miller Park. Aramis Ramirez drove in two runs and scored three times and Jeff Bianchi also plated a pair of runs for the Crew, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Wily Peralta pitched six innings of three-run ball as he improved to 9-14.  Andrew McCutchen homered, while Marlon Byrd went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Pittsburgh, which is now just one-game ahead of St. Louis for first place in the NL Central. Francisco Liriano was tagged for seven runs in just three frames as he fell to 15-7.

Rockies Hold Off Dodgers

(Denver, CO) --  The Rockies jumped out to a 4-0 lead and fought off the Dodgers for a 7-5 victory in the finale of a three-game set at Coors Field. Todd Helton hit his 12th homer of the season, while Josh Rutledge was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Jorge De La Rosa earned his 16th win by tossing six innings of two-run ball. Colorado avoided being swept. Edinson Volquez allowed four runs and six hits in four innings in his first start with Los Angeles.  He fell to 9-11. LA made things interesting with a three-run eighth, but couldn't complete the comeback.
