Arroyo, Reds Shut Out Cubs

(Chicago, IL) -- Bronson Arroyo combined with two relievers on a two-hitter as the Reds shut out the Cubs 5-0 at Wrigley Field. The right-hander struck out seven without a walk while allowing just two hits in seven innings for his 11th win. Todd Frazier hit a solo homer and also had an RBI double for Cincinnati, which swept the three-game series. Ryan Hanigan, Zack Cozart and Joey Votto also had RBI doubles for the Reds, who have won four straight overall and seven of their last eight games.  Chris Rusin took the loss for Chicago. David DeJesus and Darnell McDonald had the lone hits for the Cubs.

 

Pirates Cruise Past Cards To Extend NL Central Lead

(St. Louis, MO) -- Francisco Liriano went the distance as the Pirates cruised to a 5-1 win over the Cardinals in the middle of a three-game series at Busch Stadium.  Liriano gave up just four hits and one run in the ninth inning as he improved to 13-5 with the victory. Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones both homered in the second inning and Starling Marte had a two-run double for the Bucs. They snapped a four-game losing streak and extended their lead to three games over the Cards in the NL Central.  Carlos Beltran plated the lone run for the Redbirds, who had won their previous two.  Shelby Miller allowed five runs, three earned, in six frames as he slipped to 11-8.

 

Cabrera Belts 38th Homer As Tigers Top White Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- Miguel Cabrera belted a three-run homer as the Tigers overcame an early 3-0 lead to beat the White Sox 6-4 at U.S. Cellular Field. Omar Infante snapped a 3-all tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning to put Detroit ahead for good. A throwing error by Chicago third baseman Conor Gillaspie allowed two more runs to score as the Tigers snapped a three-game skid.  Rick Porcello got his ninth win and Joaquin Benoit his 15th save. John Danks dropped to 2-10 with the loss. Alexei Ramirez, Avisail Garcia and Jeff Keppinger each had two hits and an RBI for the Sox.

 

Rockies Double Up Padres In Rubber Match

(Denver, CO) -- Corey Dickerson went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run-scoring double as the Rockies beat the Padres 4-2 at Coors Field. Troy Tulowitzki also had a pair of RBI hits for Colorado, which took the rubber match of the three-game series. Jorge De La Rosa allowed two runs in seven innings of work to improve to 12-6 with the win.  Rex Brothers pitched the ninth to post his 11th save. The Rockies took five of six games on their homestand against the Pirates and Padres.  Chris Denorfia and Jesus Guzman had RBI singles for San Diego. Andrew Cashner fell to 8-7 with the loss.

 

Nats Hold Off Giants

(Washington, DC) -- Anthony Rendon drove in two and Ian Desmond homered as the Nationals hung on for a 6-5 win over the Giants at Nationals Park.  The Giants put up four runs in the final two innings but the Nats held on for their fifth straight victory. Ryan Zimmerman and Kurt Suzuki also plated a run each for Washington, which will go for the thee-game sweep on Thursday. Jordan Zimmermann tossed seven innings of one-run ball as he upped his mark to 14-6. Rafael Soriano gave up a run in the ninth but held on for his 31st save. Buster Posey homered and Pablo Sandoval had a two-run double during a three-run eighth for the Giants, who have dropped three in-a-row and eight of their last 11. Tim Lincecum allowed six runs in six frames as he slipped to 6-12.

 

Braves Double Up Phillies

(Atlanta, GA  -- Chris Johnson drove in three runs to back six solid innings from Brandon Beachy, as the Braves doubled up the Phillies 6-3 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Turner Field. The game was delayed nearly two hours due to rain. Beachy gave up just two runs as he improved to 2-and-0 with the win. Craig Kimbrel closed it out for his 38th save. Jason Heyward homered to leadoff the bottom of the first for the Braves, who have won 17 of their last 19 games. Domonic Brown went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Darin Ruf added a solo shot for the Phils, who have dropped five-of-six. John Lannan allowed five runs while recording just four outs before leaving with a left knee injury. He fell to 3-6 with the loss.

 

Dodgers Walk-Off On Mets

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Adrian Gonzalez doubled in Yasiel Puig in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Dodgers dropped the Mets 5-4 in Los Angeles.  Andre Ethier tied the game in the ninth with a two-run homer for Los Angeles, which was down 4-0 after the third inning but rallied for its eighth straight win. Paco Rodriguez picked up the win. Marlon Byrd finished a triple shy of the cycle. He was 3-for-6 with three RBI for New York, which has lost four-of-six. Pedro Feliciano suffered the loss.

 

Indians Outlast Twins In 12 Innings

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Michael Brantley's sac-fly in the top of the 12th inning held up as the Indians outlasted the Twins 9-8 at Target Field.  Carlos Santana homered in the 10th to give the Tribe an 8-7 lead, but Joe Mauer answered with a solo shot in the bottom half to tie the game again for Minnesota. Jason Giambi hit a three-run homer for Cleveland, which took two-of-three in the series. Chris Perez blew his fourth save but got credit for the win. Joe Smith notched his second save. Ryan Pressly took the loss for the Twins. Mauer finished 5-of-7 with four RBI for Minnesota in defeat.

 

Soriano Powers Yankees Over Angels

(Bronx, NY) -- Alfonso Soriano belted a grand slam in the first inning as the Yankees cruised by the Angels 11-3 in New York. He finished 3-for-3 with three runs and seven RBI, including a solo homer. He is the third player to knock in six-plus runs in consecutive games. Robinson Cano went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for New York, which has won four-straight.  Alex Rodriguez doubled and scored twice in the win.  Ivan Nova struck out six and allowed three runs in seven-and-a-third innings for the win. Jered Weaver allowed a career-high nine runs in five innings for the loss. Mike Trout was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Los Angeles, which has lost eight of its last 10.

 

Blue Jays Walk-Off On Red Sox

(Toronto, Ontario) -- Brett Lawrie singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Blue Jays to a 4-3 win over the Red Sox in Toronto.  Rajai Davis went 3-for-5 with two runs for Toronto, which snapped a three-game slide. Edwin Encarnacion also touched home twice in the win.  Brad Lincoln picked up the victory. David Ortiz and Mike Napoli each went deep for Boston, which has lost two-of-three. Napoli's two-run shot tied the game in the ninth. Brandon Workman suffered the loss in relief.

 

Rays Down M's In Ninth

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- The Rays erased a 4-1 deficit and clinched a 4-3 win over the Mariners with a Jason Bourgeois pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth at the Trop. Matt Joyce tied the game in the deciding inning with a one-run, base knock. Wil Myers got the rally started with a two-run homer in the sixth, his ninth of the season  Reliever Joel Peralta improved to 2-5 as Tampa Bay snapped a six-game losing streak. Brad Miller drove in two runs in the loss.  Danny Farquhar blew the save and took his first loss for Seattle, which had won its previous two games.

 

Astros Top A's In 11

(Oakland, CA) -- Carlos Corporan doubled in a run in the top of the 11th inning to give the Astros a 2-1 win over the Athletics in Oakland. Chris Carter belted a solo homer in the seventh for Houston, which has won two straight for the first time since mid-June. Jarred Cosart allowed three hits and a walk over six scoreless innings for a no decision. Lucas Harrell picked up the win and Josh Fields earned the save. Brandon Moss tied the game in the seventh with a double for Oakland, which had won three-of-four prior to this series.  Jarrod Parker allowed a run over 8 1/3 frames for a no decision. Sean Doolittle suffered the loss.

 

Marlins Top Royals To Take Series

(Kansas City, MO) -- The Marlins scored twice in both the seventh and ninth innings to knock off the Royals 5-2 at Kauffman Stadium. Justin Ruggiano snapped a franchise-record 0-for-42 streak by going 3-for-4 with an RBI as Miami took the final two games of the three-game series. Logan Morrison added a pair of hits and drove in two for the Fish. Dan Jennings got the win and Steve Cishek his 26th save. Tim Collins allowed a pair of unearned runs after an Elliot Johnson error to take the loss. Salvador Perez and David Lough drove in runs for Kansas City.

 

D'Backs Sweep O's

(Phoenix, AZ) -- The Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep of the Orioles with a 5-4 win at Chase Field in 14 innings with all three games ending on the last at-bat. Wednesday was Aaron Hill's time to shine connecting for a one-run single in the final inning after tying the game with an RBI base knock in the bottom of the ninth.  In the first contest, Adam Eaton ended it with a solo homer and Paul Goldschmidt did the same on Tuesday. The D'backs were able to erase a 4-1 deficit to win their sixth game in the last eight. Heath Bell earned the win. Manny Machado was 3-for-6 with a homer and two RBI in the loss. Jim Johnson blew his league leading ninth save, but Bud Norris fell to 8-10.

 

Rangers Clip Brewers

(Arlington, TX) -- The Rangers used a three-run seventh inning to push past the Brewers, 5-4, and split the two-game set in Arlington. Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus each had two hits and two RBI as Texas has won nine of ten.  Reliever Jason Frasor earned his fourth win and Joe Nathan locked down his 36th save. Juan Francisco was 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBI in the loss. John Axford fell to 5-6. Milwaukee is 52-68.
