Reds Shut Down Cubs

(Chicago, IL) -- Mat Latos shut out the Cubs on six hits and struck out nine as the Reds topped Chicago 2-0 at Wrigley Field. Latos won for the 12th time this season against only three losses. Brandon Phillips drove in both runs with a home run in the seventh inning.  Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his 28th save. Travis Wood allowed two runs on four hits over eight innings but was the hard-luck loser. Wood fell to 7-9.

 

White Sox Top Tigers

(Chicago, IL) -- Gordon Beckham plated the go-ahead run during a three-run fifth inning as the White Sox topped the Tigers 6-2 in the opener of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.  Josh Phegley drove in two runs and scored once, while Jeff Keppinger went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Sox, who have won two of their last three. Chris Sale went the distance, allowing two runs while striking out six as he improved his mark to 8-11. Miguel Cabrera hit his 37th homer of the year for Detroit, which has dropped three-of-four since its 12-game winning streak. Doug Fister allowed four runs in six frames as he fell to 10-6.

 

Phillies Bop Braves

(Atlanta, GA) -- Cody Asche swatted a three-run homer and the Phillies got manager Charlie Manuel his 1,000th career managerial win, 5-1 over the Braves at Turner Field. Cole Hamels took a shutout into the ninth inning and ended up with a complete-game six-hitter. He struck out nine to improve to 5-13. Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley both had two hits in a game lengthened by a rain.  Chris Johnson knocked in the Braves' only run. Julio Teheran allowed four runs on six hits in six innings to fall to 9-6. The Phils snapped a three-game losing streak. Atlanta had won 15 of its previous 16 games. During the game, a man fell 65 feet from the upper deck to his death.

 

Rockies Rout Padres

(Denver, CO) -- Dexter Fowler went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Rockies to a 14-2 rout of the Padres in the opener of a three-game series at Coors Field.  Wilin Rosario drove in three runs, while DJ LeMahieu homered, drove in two and scored three times for the Rockies, who have won four in-a-row after a five-game skid. Nolan Arenado added four hits, an RBI and scored twice in the victory. Jhoulys Chacin tossed eight innings of one-run ball as he improved to 11-6. Jeff Decker and Jedd Gyorko both homered for San Diego, which has lost five-of-six. Edinson Volquez was rocked for eight runs in 4 1/3 frames as he slipped to 8-10.

 

Dodgers Double Up Mets

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Yasiel Puig plated the go-ahead run during a three-run sixth inning as the Dodgers doubled up the Mets 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Chavez Ravine.  Nick Punto homered and Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Dodgers, who have won six straight and 15 of their last 17. Ricky Nolasco tossed six-and-a-third innings of two-run ball to even his record at 9-9. Kenley Jansen closed it out for his 18th save.  John Buck and Omar Quintanilla both had two hits and drove in a run each for the Mets, who had won their previous two. Jenrry Mejia allowed three runs, two earned, in six frames as he fell to 1-2.

 

Callaspo Helps A's Top Jays

(Toronto, Ontario) -- Alberto Callaspo's two-run double ignited a four-run ninth inning as the A's pulled out a 5-1 win over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Stephen Vogt and Eric Sogard added insurance runs for Oakland, which took three of four in the series.  Chris Young also homered for the A's. Ryan Cook got the win in relief of Dan Straily, who pitched seven and a third innings of one-run ball. Casey Janssen took the loss in relief for Toronto. Callaspo's error at third base allowed the Blue Jays to tie the game at one in the bottom of the eighth.

 

Darvish Dominates Astros In Rangers Victory

(Houston, TX) -- Yu Darvish took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning as the Rangers squeaked by the Astros 2-1 at Minute Maid Park. Darvish surrendered his lone hit on a Carlos Corporan solo homer with one out in the eighth. He struck out a career-high 15 batters while picking up his 12th win. Joe Nathan worked the ninth to secure the Rangers' eighth straight victory with his 35th save. Adrian Beltre went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Astros starter Brett Oberholtzer fell to 2-1 despite allowing only two runs in 6 2/3 frames. Houston has dropped six straight.

 

Yanks Clip Angels

(Bronx, NY) -- David Robertson struck out Mark Trumbo and Chris Nelson with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch the Yankees 2-1 win over the Angels in the Bronx.  Mariano Rivera was given the night off after blowing three consecutive saves for the first time in his career. Robertson picked up his first save of the season. Hiroki Kuroda tossed eight shutout innings, striking out seven to grab his 11th win. The offense was supplied by a Brett Gardner RBI single and a Curtis Granderson solo homer. New York has won three-of-four to move to 60-57. Josh Hamilton was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the loss. Garrett Richards fell to 3-5, despite pitching all eight innings and allowing two runs.  Los Angeles is 53-64.

 

Royals Dump Marlins

(Kansas City, MO) -- The Royals kicked off their three-game series with the Marlins at Kauffman Stadium with a 6-2 win behind a strong pitching performance from Wade Davis.  Davis tossed six innings of two-run ball and improved to 6-9. Six different players drove in runs for Kansas City, including a solo shot from Billy Butler. The Royals are 19-5 since the All-Star break and have moved to eight games above .500. Logan Morrison and Greg Dobbs each drove in a run for Miami, which lost for the eighth time in its last nine games. Tom Koehler fell to 3-8 after allowing five runs and not making it out of the sixth.

 

Eaton, D'backs Walk Off Orioles

(Phoenix, AZ) -- A wild back-and-forth game ended with an Adam Eaton walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Diamondbacks a 7-6 win over the Orioles at Chase Field.  It was the opener of a three-game set. Brad Ziegler, who got the win, blew a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Chris Davis tied the game in the top the eighth on a solo shot and Wil Nieves answered the following half inning with a solo shot of his own. It was Nieves first homer of the season. Aaron Hill also connected for a two-run shot as Arizona improved to 60-57. Darren O'Day took the loss for Baltimore, which is 2-and-2 in its last four.

 

Albers Impressive As Twins Blank Indians

(Minneapolis, MN) -- After throwing 8 1/3 scoreless innings in his Major League debut against the Royals last week, Andrew Albers had a lot to live up to in his encore performance. But Albers surpassed his impressive debut, as he threw a two-hit shutout in his second big league start, and was backed by a pair of homers from Brian Dozier and Trevor Plouffe to lead the Twins to a 3-0 win over the Indians on Monday night at Target Field.

 

Baseball Fan Dies After Falling 65 Feet At Atlanta's Turner Field

Atlanta Police Officer John Chafee says the man fell about 65 feet from the upper deck into the players' parking lot during the Braves' 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.  He was transported to the hospital where he later died. There is still no word on what caused the fall, which occurred during a nearly two-hour rain delay. This is the second death at Turner Field, which opened in 1996. A 25-year-old man died in a similar accident in May of 2008.

 

Giants Fan Steps Forward In Banana Incident

(San Francisco, CA) -- A San Francisco Giants fan has come forward as the one who threw a banana in the direction of Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones. Jones wasn't concerned about what the motivation was behind the incident.

A 42-year old Northern California resident tells the "San Jose Mercury News" he did the gesture in anger over the Giants performance. Baltimore crushed San Francisco, 10-2. He claims it was not racially motivated.
