North Clay Wins, Area Baseball Roundup

LOUISVILLE -- North Clay took a 3-0 opening inning lead and never looked back in an 11-1 high school baseball victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo in five innings via the 10-run rule Wednesday.

The Cardinals edged out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning then had a two-run second and finished with a six-run third.

North Clay evened its record to 3-3 and is back in action today at Edwards County (Albion) in a 4:30 p.m. contest.

Zayden Gillespie led BSE with two singles while Corey Hoopingarner had a single and two RBI.

Brownstown/St. Elmo is 1-2 on the season and returns to play today at Martinsivlle.

At Windsor

Arcola stepped out to a 4-0 opening inning lead and went on for a 16-1 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in four innings Wednesday.

Arcola had 12 hits and was aided by seven Windsor/Stew-Stras errors.

The Hatchets had five hits, all singles by Jackson Gurgel, Ben Bridges, Carter Verdeyen, Derk Friese and Oliver Wascher.

B. Phillips threw a five-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts for Arcola.

Effingham St. Anthony defeated Effingham 9-1 in junior varsity action Wednesday.

The Bulldogs held a 2-0 opening inning lead then tallied single runs in the third, fourth and fifth and four in the sixth. Effingham's lone run came in the sixth.

Quintin Stephens had two singles and two RBI for the Bulldogs while Chase Dorris and Will Bierman finished with two singles and an RBI each. Will Vonderheide added a single and an RBI and Charley Spour an RBI.

Effingham's hits, all singles, were by J. Wendt, A. Leonard and I. Kinkelaar. Kinkelaar had an RBI.
