Cardinals, White Sox Win, Rockies Get By Cubs, ML Roundup

Cardinals Tip Padres

(St. Louis, MO) -- Adam Wainwright pitched eight strong innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts, leading the Cardinals over the Padres 3-2 at Busch Stadium. Wainwright leads the National League in wins with 13. David Freese had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Edward Mujica pitched out of a jam in the ninth inning to earn his 28th save. Mujica got help from a catch at the wall from Allen Craig that took away what could have been an extra-base hit. Yonder Alonso had three hits and a run batted in. The Padres managed three extra-base hits outside of Alonso's effort but couldn't push another run across. Eric Stults took the loss after going six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. He's 8-8, but the Padres have lost 16 of their last 19 games.

 

Rockies Get By Cubs

(Denver, CO  -- Nolan Arenado broke out of an 0-for-17 slump with a single to drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, and the Rockies went on to a 4-3 win over the Cubs at Coors Field. Carlos Gonzalez had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run, helping starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood earn the win. Chatwood allowed one-earned run on seven hits over six innings to improve to 6-3. Rex Brothers allowed a run in the top of the ninth, but notched his fifth save of the season. Anthony Rizzo homered and Starling Castro had four hits for the Cubs. Edwin Jackson gave up three-earned runs on five hits through seven innings and took the loss to drop to 6-11.

 

White Sox Sink Braves

(Chicago, IL  -- Alex Rios was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI as the White Sox sank the Braves 3-1 at U.S. Cellular Field. Alejandro De Aza was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs for Chicago, which won the final two games of this three-game series. Jose Quintana allowed a run in 5 2/3 innings for the win. Addison Reed picked up his 25th save. Mike Minor tossed an eight-inning complete game, giving up the three runs with eight strikeouts as he dipped to 9-5. Evan Gattis knocked in the run for Atlanta, which has lost three-of-four.  

 

Rays Nip Blue Jays

(Toronto, Ontario  -- Kelly Johnson was 3-for-4 with a solo home run as the Rays nipped the Blue Jays 4-3 in Toronto. Luke Scott had a two-run shot while Evan Longoria belted a solo homer for Tampa Bay, which has won 20-of-24 overall. Chris Archer allowed one run in seven innings as he improved to 5-3. Fernando Rodney locked up his 24th save with a rocky ninth inning. R.A. Dickey gave up four runs in six innings as he dipped to 8-11. Jose Reyes was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for Toronto, which has lost four straight.

 

Harvey, Mets Blank Phillies

(Flushing, NY) -- Matt Harvey struck out 10 over seven innings of three-hit ball as the Mets blanked the Phillies 5-0 at Citi Field. Harvey improved to 8-2 on the season. Juan Lagares lifted a three-run homer for New York, which took two-of-three in this series. David Wright and Marlon Byrd each had a solo home run in the win. Cliff Lee gave up all five runs in six innings as he fell to 10-4.

 

Masterson, Tribe Topple Twins

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Justin Masterson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Indians rolled the Twins 7-1 in Minneapolis. Masterson struck out eight and allowed one hit and a run as he improved to 11-7. Jason Kipnis hit a two-run homer and knocked in three runs for Cleveland, which avoided the three-game sweep. Michael Brantley also knocked in three runs in the win. Joe Mauer drove in the only run for Minnesota, which had won its previous four games. Scott Diamond gave up six runs in under five frames for the loss.

 

Tigers Trounce Royals

(Kansas City, MO) -- Doug Fister tossed six innings of one-run ball as the Tigers topped the Royals 4-1 in Kansas City. Miguel Cabrera belted his 31st homer while Andy Dirks lifted his seventh for Detroit, which avoided the three-game sweep. Joaquin Benoit locked up his ninth save. James Shields allowed three runs in seven innings for the loss. Miguel Tejada hit a solo homer for KC.

 

Mariners Maul Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Nick Franklin blasted a grand slam to pace the Mariners to a 12-5 win over the Astros in Houston. Dustin Ackley was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for Seattle, which has won six straight. Michael Saunders scored twice and knock in two runs in the win.  Brad Miller also had a pair of RBI for the M's, who built a 12-1 lead before Houston scored four times in the ninth. Felix Hernandez struck out seven in six innings of shutout ball as he moved to 11-4. Jordan Lyles gave up 10 runs in four frames for the loss. Jake Elmore was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs for Houston, which has lost five in-a-row.

 

Colon, A's Blank Halos

(Anaheim, CA) -- Bartolo Colon tossed a complete game to pace the Athletics to a 6-0 win over the Angels in Anaheim. He improved to 13-3 while allowing only one walk and four hits. Eric Sogard scored twice and hit a two-run home run for Oakland, which avoided the three-game sweep. Brandon Moss was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the win. Chris Iannetta was 2-for-3 for Los Angeles, which has lost four-of-six. Jerome Williams allowed six runs in five-plus frames for the loss.

 

Orioles Double Up Rangers, Complete Sweep

(Arlington, TX) -- Chris Tillman tossed a gem leading the Orioles to a 4-2 victory over the Rangers, completing a three-game weekend sweep in Arlington. Tillman went eight-plus innings and allowed two runs while striking out seven to move to 12-3. Darren O'Day came on for the final two outs to earn his second save. J.J. Hardy, Matt Wieters and Brian Roberts were each 2-for-4 with an RBI for Baltimore, which has won seven out of eight overall. Martin Perez gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings to fall to 3-3 for Texas. Ian Kinsler was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Adrian Beltre hit a solo homer as the Rangers lost their seventh in eight games.

 

Napoli's Second Blast Sends BoSox Past Yanks

(Boston, MA) -- Mike Napoli's second homer of the game came in the bottom of the 11th and sent the Red Sox to an 8-7 win over the Yankees at Fenway Park. Napoli drove in four while Jonny Gomes hit a solo shot for Boston. Shane Victorino plated a pair for the Red Sox, who took two of three from the Yankees and have won six of nine overall. Pedro Beato picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Sox. Robinson Cano was 3-for-5 with two RBI while Brett Gardner ended the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run for New York. CC Sabathia was tagged for seven runs in five-plus innings but it was Adam Warren that took the loss. The Yanks have lost four out of five.
 

Pirates Down Reds

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Jeff Locke struck out six in as many innings of one-run ball as the Pirates dropped the Reds 3-2 in Cincinnati. Locke moved to 9-and-2 on the season.  Garrett Jones lifted a solo homer for Pittsburgh, which snapped a three-game slide. Jason Grilli picked up his 30th save. Homer Bailey struck out 12 but allowed three runs in 6 1/3 frames for the loss. Zack Cozart scored on a wild pitch and Joey Votto knocked in a run with a double play for Cincinnati, which had won three in-a-row.

 

Dodgers Dump Nationals

(Washington, DC) -- Matt Kemp was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBI as the Dodgers dropped the Nationals 9-2 in Washington. Kemp left in the ninth after injuring his ankle trying to score. This was his first game back from the DL after missing 11 games. Hanley Ramirez drilled a three-run jack for Los Angeles, which swept the three-game series.  Clayton Kershaw struck out nine in seven innings of two-hit, two-run ball for his ninth win. Jordan Zimmermann allowed seven runs in two innings as he dipped to 12-5. Jayson Werth had a pair of homers for Washington, which is 2-8 in its last 10 games.

 

Diamondbacks Avoid Sweep With Win Over Giants

(San Francisco, CA) -- The Diamondbacks held on to first place in the National League West with a 3-1 win over the Giants at AT&T Park. Arizona avoided being swept after losing the first two games of the series. Former Giant Cody Ross hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to give the D'backs a 3-0 lead and the bullpen held the lead for winning pitcher Randall Delgado, who improved to 2-3. Martin Prado had three hits and scored twice and Paul Goldschmidt had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Brad Ziegler gave up and unearned run in the bottom of the ninth but got his fourth save. All-Star Madison Bumgarner allowed a run on five hits and struck out six but took the loss for the Giants to fall to 10-6. Arizona remains a half-game in front of Los Angeles for first place in the division while the Giants fell 5 1/2 games back of the Diamondbacks.  

 

Brewers Walkoff On Marlins

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Caleb Gindl's first major-league home run was a walkoff shot in the 13th inning as the Brewers defeated the Marlins 1-0 at Miller Park. It was the first such home run of the season for Milwaukee and the shutout tied a club record as the Brewers' third consecutive win without allowing a run. Miami's scoreless streak reached 37 innings, the longest in major-league baseball since 1985. Gindl had two hits to lead the Brewers, who got eight shutout innings from Wily Peralta. John Axford pitched two innings for the win in relief.  Ryan Webb allowed the decisive home run and took the loss to fall to 1-4. Adeiny Hechevarria had two of the Marlins' four hits. The Brewers have won four straight going back to before the All-Star break and the Marlins have lost four-in-a-row.

 

Yankees' Rodriguez Out With Quad Strain

The New York Yankees will continue to play without third baseman Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees announced he will not join the team in Texas as previously planned due to a Grade 1 left quad strain. He is returning to Tampa for treatment. Rodriguez appeared for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Saturday in a designated hitter's role, but he missed Sunday's game due to the injury. He is recovering from offseason hip surgery and has yet to appear in the big leagues this season.
