Effingham Post 120 Seniors Claim Victories To Advance To District Title Game

Effingham Post 120 Seniors handed Salem and Olney losses in district tournament baseball action during the weekend.

Effingham defeated Salem 5-4 after a late game single. Salem held a 2-0 lead after two innings but Effingham came back with a run in the third and tied the score in the fifth. Effingham then took a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh but Salem knotted the score again in the bottom of the inning. Effingham tallied the winning run in the ninth.

Hayes had two singles, a double and an RBI for Effingham while Levitt had a single and double and Mayfield two singles and an RBI.

Walker picked up the pitching win going 2.1 innings, allowing two walks and striking out two. He came on in relief of Quandt who went 6.2 innings allowing seven hits, five walks and struck out six.

In the game against Olney Sunday night, Effingham Post 120 Seniors got late runs to finish off the Olney Elite 14-6.

Effingham held a 6-5 lead after seven innings then had a six-run eighth and a two-run ninth. Effingham banged out 18 hits in the contest led by Dirk Levitt with two singles, two doubles and three RBI, Traub with two singles, a double and two RBI, Hayes with two singles, a double and an RBI and Quandt with a single, double and two RBI. McDonald had two singles and two RBI and Wright had two singles.

Effingham advanced to the district championship Tuesday through the winner bracket. They will face Robinson, Olney or Salem at 5 p.m. If they lose, they will have to play again at 8 p.m.
