Cubs Take Rubber Match From Brewers

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Dioner Navarro belted a three-run homer as the Cubs built an early 7-0 lead and cruised to a 7-2 win over the Brewers at Miller Park. Brian Bogusevic had an RBI double for Chicago, which took the final two games of the three-game series. Matt Garza struck out 10 over seven innings of one-run ball for his third win. He also had two hits and scored a run for the Cubs. Wily Peralta dropped to 5-9 with the loss. Juan Francisco homered and Logan Schafer had an RBI double for Milwaukee, which has lost three-of-four.

 

D'backs Nip Nats In 11th To Avoid Sweep

(Washington, DC) -- Didi Gregorius plated A.J. Pollock on a safety-squeeze bunt in the top of the 11th inning as the Diamondbacks nipped the Nationals 3-2 to avoid a three-game sweep in the nation's capital. Aaron Hill hit a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the game at two for Arizona, which snapped a three-game skid. Patrick Corbin fired seven innings of two-run ball, but remains 9-0 following his fifth consecutive no-decision. Josh Collmenter improved to 4-0 with the win. Heath Bell closed it out for his 14th save.  Ian Desmond belted a two-run homer for the Nats, who have dropped three-of-five. Craig Stammen fell to 4-3 with the loss. The start of the game was delayed over one hour due to rain.

 

Mets Slip Past Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- Marlon Byrd hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to give the Mets a 3-2 win over Rockies at Coors Field.  Colorado wasn't able to hold onto the 2-0 lead they built in the second inning behind a RBI by Todd Helton. New York reliever LaTroy Hawkins picked up the win and Bobby Parnell locked up his 14th save.  The Mets are 5-and-2 in their last seven games.  Rockies reliever Matt Belisle took the loss as they fell to 39-41. Michael Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to a franchise-record 24 games.

 

Dodgers Bounce Phillies

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The Dodgers continued to roll as they pulled out a 6-4 win over the Phillies in the first of four games at Dodger Stadium.  Los Angeles won its sixth straight game behind two RBI apiece from Yasiel Puig and Andre Ethier. Matt Kemp was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Zack Greinke improved to 5-2 dealing seven innings of four-run ball. Philadelphia complied 14 hits, but left seven men on base and were 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.  Dominic Brown and Chase Utley each hit solo homers in the loss. The Phillies had a two-game winning streak snapped.  Reliever Justin De Fratus fell to 2-2.

 

Rangers, Holland Shut Out Yanks

(Bronx, NY) -- Derek Holland threw a complete-game, two-hitter as the Rangers shut out the Yankees 2-0 in the Bronx. The left-hander struck out seven and walked two to improve to 6-4 on the season. Ian Kinsler lofted a sac-fly in the third inning and Jurickson Profar homered in the fifth for Texas, which took the final two games of the three-game set. Phil Hughes gave up two runs in eight frames to suffer the tough-luck loss and fall to 3-7. Ichiro Suzuki and Austin Romine had the only hits for New York, which has lost three of its last four.

 

Angels Outlast Tigers In 10 Innings

(Detroit, MI) -- Albert Pujols doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as the Angels beat the Tigers 3-1 at Comerica Park.  Josh Hamilton added a sac-fly as Los Angeles swept the three-game series.  Mike Trout went 4-for-5 and Brad Hawpe singled in a run for the Halos.  Kevin Jepsen got the win and Ernesto Frieri his 19th save. Phil Coke fell to 0-5 with the loss. Brayan Pena had an RBI single for Detroit.  Starters Jered Weaver and Doug Fister each allowed one run in seven innings.

 

Orioles Roll Indians

(Baltimore, MD) -- The Orioles scored five times in the fifth inning en route to a 7-3 victory over the Indians to split the four-game series in Baltimore. Chris Davis and Matt Wieters each had two runs and an RBI for Baltimore, which is three-and-a-half games back of Boston in the AL East.  Ryan Flaherty added two RBI and a run in the win. Miguel Gonzalez struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings of three-run ball for his sixth win. Lonnie Chisenhall 2 1/2 behind Detroit in the AL Central. Corey Kluber gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 frames for the loss.

 

Twins Handle Royals

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Samuel Deduno pitched seven strong inning to lead the Twins to a 3-1 win over the Royals at Target Field.  It was the first of four games between the two teams.  Deduno allowed one run and five hits as he jumped to 4-2. Justin Morneau was 2-for-4 with a RBI.  Minnesota had lost four of its previous five games. Salvador Perez accounted for the only Kansas City run with a homer. Jeremy Guthrie took the loss giving up two earned runs, three overall, in 6 1/3 innings. The Royals are 2-6 in their last eight games.

 

Red Sox Pound Blue Jays

(Boston, MA) -- The Chien-Ming Wang experiment still has a chance to yield a positive outcome, if it hasn't already. The Blue Jays had won all three of his starts prior to Thursday. But against the Red Sox, a team Wang was often at the mercy of during his time with the Yankees, devastation might have been predictable. Wang was able to record only three outs before the Sox turned a foggy game into batting practice. Seven straight reached base safely to start the second inning, and all seven scored as the Red Sox pounded a familiar foe on their way to a 7-4 win in the first of a crucial four-game American League East series.
